James 4:1-10 – War and Peace

WAR AND PEACE!

James 4:1-10.

INTRODUCTION.

James has spent ch.3 dealing with the tongue which is more difficult to tame than a herd of wild horses and with wisdom in its good and evil forms. [Remeber that this letter was not written in chapters and verses] He ended chapter 3 talking about peace and a harvest of righteousness – this would be ideal – this should be the goal. HOWEVER it would seem James readers were far from reaching this ideal – in fact the contrast between 3v18 and 4v1 is quite astounding.

James 3:18-4:1 18 Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.

1 What causes fights and quarrels among you? (NIV)

He now goes on to point out very clearly that these fights and struggles are not from God and calls on those involved to repent and be forgiven.

He states what the problem is – strife, fightings, wars, quarrels.

He explains the cause of the problem – selfish desires and motives.

He expounds a solution to this problem – repent / draw near or submit to God.

OUTLINE:- The Root of the conflict.

The Result of the conflict.

The Remedy of the conflict.

  1. THE ROOT OF THE CONFLICT.

James 4:1-2

1 What causes fights [WARS] and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? (NIV)

– fights = [WARS] – fights; quarrel; battle; kill — isn’t James being a bit dramatic? Isn’t he writing to Christians? Surely he can’t be describing what happens in churches?

These are the kind of words we use when describing the conflict in Bosnia or Chechenya – or when we are discussing World War II. This is the language of flame-throwers, missiles, anti-missiles and nuclear weapons – of burning buildings and body-bags.

But James is not writing to a Military Academy he is writing to a church – but [ as Alec Motyer writes] he “Chooses the vocabulary of war to express controversies and quarrels, animosities and bad feeling among Christians, not because there is no other way of saying it, but because there is no other way of expressing the horror of it.” (Motyer p.141)

CONDITION – James is describing the condition of the Churches to whom he was writing and it is not a pretty picture. He does not mean that they are actually murdering each other or continually quarreling but that there is a atomosphere of animosity. The peace and unity of the Church is not what it should be!

ILLUST.: The American frontier where two families would fued for years – that did not mean that they were shooting at each other every day but that there was a state of war between them that would break out into fighting from time to time.

Sadly these situation sometime arise in Churches – power struggles between different personalities

Why do such situations arise? CAUSE – Whenever there is a war or a fight or an argument – there is always a cause. Wars don’t just happen – someone starts them!! It is always the fault of the other side, however! James does not allow us to look at this from a distance BUT he tells us to look inside us James 4:1

……..   Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? (NIV)

Listen!” says James “You guys are a walking civil war! The fights and arguments between you are only a symptom or a much deeper conflict – the one inside you!”

These desires and passions inside us are characterised by self seeking – it is doing and promoting those things that we want and heaven help anyone who gets in the way! The pursuit of the heart is our own happiness.

BUT we don’t have many arguments and fights in our church – NO! praise God for that BUT let us be honest with ourselves – sometimes there is a cold war – we disagree with someone but we don’t have the courage to say so and as a result we harbour resentment and bitterness. And then pat ourselves on the back for being controlled!

Maybe there is a situation in the Church or in the home that you disagree with but you don’t want to be seen to be the odd one out so you use spoiling tacits. Cold war tacits can be just as damaging to a relationship as can open warfare!

It is so easy to say “Well I don’t behave like that so I’m not guilty – this message is not for me!!” Listen – when there is bitterness, resentment, name-calling [even in the silence of your own heart] , anger –….etc. then you too are guilty!

Jesus thought it was serious – Matthew 5:23-24

23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift. (NIV)

Something – he did not specify how big or how small – something important or insignificant — just something [anything] — Was Jesus exaggerating when he put these things under the heading of ‘murder’!

When we see two Christians fall out with each other – or when we ourselves fall out with someone do we shrug our shoudlers saying that that is simply part of life.

Whose interests do we have at heart?? Are we doing what the Bible enjoins upon us to ‘consider others better than ourselves’ –

  1. THE REASONS FOR THE CONFLICT.

James 4:2a 2a You want something but don’t get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight…. (NIV)

Possibly a better translation – moving a few punctuation marks and adding two little words ‘so’ … and ‘so’ You want something but don’t get it [so]you kill. You covet, but you cannot have what you want so you quarrel and fight….

It would be much easier if James listed the things we should not want then we could tick them off and desire others BUT it is general and applies to all of us.

Twice in this verse James says ‘..want …’

Twice ‘.. can’t have … ‘ ‘…don’t get..’

So often we pursue possessions, power and pleasure – we sacrifice in order to have yet we are never satisfied.

Ecclesiastes 2:1-11

1 I thought in my heart, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure to find out what is good.” But that also proved to be meaningless. 2 “Laughter,” I said, “is foolish. And what does pleasure accomplish?” 3 I tried cheering myself with wine, and embracing folly — my mind still guiding me with wisdom. I wanted to see what was worth while for men to do under heaven during the few days of their lives.

4 I undertook great projects: I built houses for myself and planted vineyards. 5 I made gardens and parks and planted all kinds of fruit trees in them. 6 I made reservoirs to water groves of flourishing trees. 7 I bought male and female slaves and had other slaves who were born in my house. I also owned more herds and flocks than anyone in Jerusalem before me. 8 I amassed silver and gold for myself, and the treasure of kings and provinces. I acquired men and women singers, and a harem as well — the delights of the heart of man. 9 I became greater by far than anyone in Jerusalem before me. In all this my wisdom stayed with me.

10 I denied myself nothing my eyes desired;

I refused my heart no pleasure.

My heart took delight in all my work,

and this was the reward for all my labour.

In these verses ‘I’ ‘me’ ‘my’ ‘myself’ occur over 30x – Yet listen to the preacher’s assessment of his achievements.

11 Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done

and what I had toiled to achieve,

everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind;nothing was gained under the sun. (NIV)

Oscar Wilde – “Sometimes the only thing worse than NOT getting what you want, is getting it!”

We must never under estimate the power of human desire

ILLUS.:- we only have to look at King David when he desire Bathsheba – adultery – murder – death – break up of his family – death of his child.

King Ahab – desire Naboth’s vineyard – murder —

BUT much closer to home we need to look into our own hearts to realise that that is where the real problem lies – it is easy to see the faults and weaknesses in others – it is so easy to be self-righteous and smug.

ILLUS.: Many years ago The Times newspaper read some correspondence under the title ‘What is wrong with the World?’ The best and shortest letter read:

“ Dear Sir, I am. yours sincerely, G K Chesterton

This is the kind of honesty we have to have with ourselves – unless we see ourselves as we are, we will never see the need for repentence and God’s continuing forgiveness – one of the things that I believe is missing in my own life is that I have become insensitive to sin – I have been a Christian for a long time and I have developed a Christian lifestyle that is outwardly respectable and I bask in the light of people’s praise and yet I know that often my heart is cold and I am far from God –

It is in me that wars and fightings begin –

  1. THE RESULTS OF THE CONFLICT.

James 4:2b-3 2b ….. You do not have, because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. (NIV)

There are two things that are the results of these conflicts and desires:

unanswered prayers

emnity with God.

  1. a) They do not have because they do not ask.

Are there things that you want from God – Have you asked him!

O what peace we often forfiet

O what needless pain we bear

All becaue we do not carry

Everyting to God in Prayer.

If you can’t pray about it then ask if it is right and if we ought to be doing it — NOT ‘Lord bless me while I do this’ BUT ‘Lord what do you want me to do’

  1. b) When they do ask they don’t receive.

James 4:2-3 ….. don’t get it. …. you cannot have what you want. … You do not have, because you do not ask God. 3…, you do not receive, …

These verse not only marked by intense desire but also by immense disappointment in that we don’t get what we desire.

It is not that God doesn’t hear – God is not deaf –

Not that pray is not answered – BUT that they don’t get what they want.

  1. c) They don’t receive because their motives are wrong.

Why do we ask for things –

Possible – ask for wokmate so we easier life

Possible to ask for spouse so we more comfortable

Possible to ask for mission need so we less pressure to do something..

BUT God is sovereign and he does grant many of these things often in spite of our selfish motives!

Parable of Tax-collector and Pharisee

Luke 18:10-14 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men — robbers, evildoers, adulterers — or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’

13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’

14 “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” (NIV)

Jesus does not comdemn pharisee for honesty, not commiting adultery or forfasting BUT for his motives and boastings.

How then should we pray?? JOHN tells …

1 John 5:14 14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. (NIV)

Q> What is prayer according to God’s will?

– not a way of manipulating God.

– not a way of changing God’s mind?

Psalm 37:4   4 Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. (NIV)

I used to think I had God over a barrel on this BUT as we delight ourselves in the Lord our desires become his and we then ask what according with his will.

Q> What about asking in Jesus name?

John 14:13-14 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. (NIV)

ILLUS.: Secretary does things in the name of the Boss – eg. letters – BUT she knows tha Boss well enough to know what he wants said and often exactly the way he would.

As we grow in Christ we grow in the confidence that we will ask according to his will and that he will hear us and answer!!

All true prayer is simply a variation on a theme – “Your will be done….”

Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden — ‘ My will be done..’

It is difficult to know – our motives so mixed – often do not even know our own hearts —

Bible tells that our hearts are devious and decietful..

When we follow our own desires and passions there is always a price to pay – — in human conflict and damaged relationships — and in unfulfilled desires — BUT also a spiritual price in a breach of communication with God.

Two options — stop our prayers or cleanse our hearts — James will deal with this in vv.6-10

Need God’s wisdom to know our hearts and to know how to pray – James has already told us that we should ask God who gives generously to all who ask — Maybe we don’t hav this wisdom because we have not asked God.

James 3:13-18 – Who is wise?

WHO IS WISE?

JAMES 3V13-18.

INTRODUCTION.

Last time we were in James we dealt with the tongue – James showed us that in order for our speaking to be pure the source of our speaking needed to be pure.

If the source of the river is bitter the whole river is bitter – if the source of our speaking is bitter then bitter words will come out of our mouths.

If it is the source that is all important then how do we deal with the source.

James is saying “Listen, guys, if you want to be wise and understanding then you must understand where this wisdom comes from amd what it is supposed to look like.

James has talked about faith and deeds – and also the tongue. He has looked at our actions and our words — he has seen from where they are supplied viz. the heart — now he is going one step further and dealing with how and from where the heart is supplied. He is also dealing in the following verses with characteristics that the person will exhibit when the heart is rightly supplied.

Our actions and words reflect our level of wisdom and understanding – but the questions is what is wisdom??

  1. WHAT IS WISDOM?

James 3:13

13 Who is wise and understanding among you? … (NIV)

James uses two words here – wise and understanding –

“Understanding” – it carries the idea of someone who is an expert in something – one who has gained a particular kind of knowledge in a certain area.

All people have been given some level of intelligence and are expeted to use it for the glory of God. No where does the Bible ever suggest that a person who is well educated or has a high IQ is therefore superior to someone of lesser ability. What we must do, however, is see the importance of learning all we can in order to be better equipped to live life the way God intended.

“Wise” – wisdom is different – closely related but somehow greater and deeper than knowledge.

In the Bible wisdom always begins with knowing God –

Proverbs 1:7 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. (NIV)

When the Proverbs speaks of fear it does not mean that God is some kind of heavenly policeman – rather it means acknowledging that God is the source of all things and we should worship and obey him as such.

Wisdom is not just knowledge – there is little value in knowledge that remains purely cerebral – Christian belief in a creed is of not value is must reshape the life!

There are some people who know a lot about many things but their lives are in a mess – they are not very wise.

ILLUS. Janet and I know two brothers in SA who are both in the business world – one has no qualifications – but he has worked hard, not made dumb business moves and is very well-off today – the other is a Chartered Accountant – who should know how how to handle money BUT at 60 was bankrupt after a kife of bad decisions and irresponsible living.

Knowledge does not equal wisdom!!

C C Colton “It is better to have wisdom without learning than to have learning without wisdom….”

When Solomon was to become King of Israel God asked him what he wanted – His reply 2 Chronicles 1:10 10 Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?” (NIV)

Wisdom is seen in the Bible as being God centred – living closely to God – it is not just the possession of knowledge but the ability to put that knowledge to use and live the good life.

In order to explain this wisdom and understanding to us James does not tell us what we must do – rather what we must be in character.

  1. TWO KINDS OF WISDOM.

How do we know what true wisdom is? James talks of two types of wisdom – Earthly wisdom and heavenly wisdom

James 3:15-17 15 Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. 16 …….

17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven ….

It is not always easy to identify which wisdom is which – in God’s common grace he has given people the ability to think wisely – thus an atheist can still make wise decisions and give good advice – it amazes me sometimes how someone who does not acknowledge God in a personal way can live a good life [from an earthly point of view] — can give good advice and make wise decisions WHILE IN CONTRAST a Christian can sometimes be the mouthpiece of devilish wisdom — e.g. Peter told Jesus not to go to Jerusalem and what did Jesus say

Mark 8:32-33 32 He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.

33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.” (NIV)

We know that Satan masquerades as an angel of light so why not in this area also?

How then are we to know which of these two wisdoms we are dealing with??

Let’s see what James says!

  1. EARTHLY WISDOM.

James 3:14-16 14 But if you harbour bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15 Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. 16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. (NIV)

Source of earthly wisdom.

If wisdom is such a wonderful quality – we must expect a forgery.

v15 – 4 things about source

  1. NOT FROM HEAVEN – earthly wisdom will ultimately be shown for what it is – earthly – not from above – what the word lit. means.

  1. EARTHLY – see Philippians 3:19 19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things. (NIV)

same word that James uses here . What James and paul are saying is that such wisdom – living – thinking is bound to this earth – their lives are governed exclusively by the desires and influences of this world.

  1. UNSPIRITUAL – we talk of worldly-wise – there is a certain wisdom of the world – natural instincts — but it lacks a God-centredness – it is not Holy Spirit directed –

BUT simply because you and I may be Christians we must not therefore assume that all our decisions and actions will be wise – ALL Christians gifted by the Spirit is some way BUT possible to use gift in spiritual OR unspiritual way –

ILLUS.: Corinth was probably the most gifted Church in the NT but also the most carnal – “Ability or giftedness is not yardstick of spirituality

  1. DEVILISH – we hesitate to call things devilish – it is easier to talk of worldy ot natural or unspiritual but devilish conjures up picture of witches and black magic and voodoo – Is not the worldly, natural unspiritual system basically opposed to God?? YES! Then it is devilish – Satan is ultimately the promoter of all that is in oppostion to God.

Characteristics of earthly wisdom.

We have said – difficult to always iscern earthly wisdom – finally by its fruit.

BITTER ENVY – ‘envy’ lit. can be good or bad word – ‘zeal’ — ‘bitter’ means to cut or prick — it is the kind of envy that cannot bear someone elses popularity or success. Putting others down in order to elevate self. — this meaning becomes clearer when linked to selfish ambition.

SELFISH AMBITION – this is one word in Gk. – part of original meaning was political – used of a person willing to do anything to get elected to office – and we know the jealouses and schemeing involved in party-politics – not only at national level – it starts with electing house captains at school – it creeps into the church with who will do what job and hold what office.

Jmaes is dealing with motives – because at the heart of people’s problems is the problem of peoples hearts.

We can only see the actions – God weighs and searches our hearts for the motives that lie behind what we do!!

When we are motivated by jealousy and bitterness and boasting then we are walking the path of earthly wisdom!!

Outcome of earthly wisdom.

James is a great believer in cause and effect – ‘If you do this or don’t do that then such and such will follow’ — following earthly wisdom produces disorder and evil practice.

DISORDER – interesting word – used 2x in this letter James 1:8 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does. (NIV) James 3:8 8 but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. (NIV)

‘unstable – restless – disorder’

a variety of meanings – maybe he was referring to fights, divisions and disorders in the church – clearly these thibgs do not come from God -1 Corinthians 14:33 33 For God is not a God of disorder but of peace.

When a person is full of envy and selfish ambition there can never be rest. There is always someone else to envy, another mountain to climb, another position to strive after.

EVIL PRACTICES – James could have made a long list but simply says evil practices – in thought and word and deeds – when driven by envy and selfish ambition there is no limit to what people will do when driven by these passions.

The Spirit of Gof promotes unity and harmony NOT division and chaos – so when we see churches splitting we need to ask where the heavenly wisdom is. Usually these things come about because of petty, non-essential doctrines – sometime nothing to do with doctrine at all but simply a defence of self and position and a saving of face rather than a humble ‘I am sorry – I was wrong!!

  1. HEAVENLY WISDOM.

James 3:17-18

17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. 18 Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness. (NIV)

Source of Heavenly wisdom.

Left in no doubt from book of James that wisdom – true wisdom – is from God.

James 1:17 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. (NIV)

emphasize – true wisdom is a free gift from a God of grace and is no way a result of our cleverness, effort of schemeing!! It come from heaven!!

Characteristics of heanenly wisdom.

PURE – concerned not with outward expression but inner experience – examine the heart – what we are more than what we do.

Jesus in the Sermon on the mount – Matthew 5:8 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. (NIV)

The question is _’How is your heart?’   Is it pure?   undefiled? OR full of jealousy and selfish ambition.

PEACE-LOVING – Matthew 5:9 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. (NIV)

This is not a peace at all costs – not a spineless ‘keeping everyone happy’ – Jesus was apeace lover and maker – nothing spineless about him. —action not apathy.

CONSIDERATE – a sense of looking for the best in people – looking out for others or as the Bible puts is esteeming other better than self – not easy!!

SUBMISSIVE – sometime translated ‘gentle’ – again not a pushover but one not obstinately entrenched in his own opinions — standing up for his own rights — but a willingness to defer to others. Stubborn obstinacy – some people are so closed to others opinion that they think they know it all – “My mind is made up don’t confuse me with the factS!”   in churches such attutudes -esp. in leadership lead to an unhappy church!!

MERCIFUL – full of mercy – Christian Gos has been merciful to you surely you should be merciful to others!!

FRUITFUL – full of good fruit – The Salvation Army has a slogan ‘WHERE THERE IS NEED THERE IS THE SALVATION ARMY” — James would approve — Christians should be the best neighbours there can be –

IMPARTIAL – A sign that appeared over a Church door may help us to understand what James means here – —

O God, may the door of this house bewide enough to include all who need divine love and human friendship; narrow enough to shut out all envy, pride and strife. May its threshold be smooth enough not to be a stumblingblock to children or straying feet, yet rough enough to turn back the tempter’s power.’

SINCERE – without hypocrisy –

Outcome of heavenly wisdom.

James 3:18 18 Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness. (NIV)

Harvest of righteousness –

  1. Righteousness that produces a harvest – the qualities listed above –

OR

  1. the qulaities above produce a harvst which is righteousness –

As with many places in the Bible probably both !!

Peace is the soil in which this harvest grows – Surely when the above qualities are in evidence in our lives there will be peace – we will be the best and easiest people to live with.

Things that destroy peace —

Proverbs 6:16-19 16 There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, 19 a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers. (NIV)

Proverbs 3:13 13 Blessed [happy] is the one who finds wisdom, the one who gains understanding, (NIV)

How wise are we? Blanchard sugests was use the word ‘RIGHTWISENESS’ – good word combines the pusuit of wisdom and righteousness – and the two are interrelated.   God help us to be rightwise!!

James 5:13 – A God for all seasons

A God for all seasons!

James 5:13

Introduction.

ILLUS.: All looked through a kaleidoscope at some point – what is it that makes a kaleidoscope interesting? The fact that there are different shapes, sizes, colours and deflected angles of light!

If it was all the same is would be very boring!

Life is like a kaleidoscope – there are light patches and dark patches – there are mountains and valleys – there are happy times and hard times – there are successes and failures – there are times of joy and times of sorrow —>

Life, like the British weather, is very changeable – We can divide life into two very broad categories 1) Hard Times and 2) Happy Times

These are the two questions James asks in v.13:-

13 Is any one of you in trouble? …….

… Is anyone happy? … (NIV)

Given these differing circumstances of life what should be our response? James gives us the answer

… pray. …. sing songs of praise. (NIV)

Let’s look at the hard and happy times in more detail.

  1. During the Hard Times.

James 5:13 Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray.

This thought of troubled times is certainly not new to James – in ch.1 he showed that the difficulties of life are not necessarily barrier to our relationship to God but are in fact a mean to becoming mature Christians.

James 1:2-5

2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4 Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature ….. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, ……

James says that in the trials of life we need patience and perseverance and that if we lack the wisdom / ability to cope we need to ask / pray to God.

Now in ch.5 he is following the same pattern 5:7-12 – patience and perseverance under suffering – 5:13ff Prayer.

THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF HUMAN HARD TIMES.

The word James uses is more than just suffering from sickness – it is in fact a compound word that comprises to parts ‘evil’ and ‘suffering’ – it carries with it therefore the idea of ‘suffering evil blows from the outside world’

James has just spoken of the suffering of the prophets in the previous section [v.10] – this is clearly still in his mind.

The prophets suffered in different ways:

ILLUS.: Ezekiel – bereavement; Jeremiah extreme opposition; Hosea – marital breakdown. ……………..

Christians are as prone to hard times as anyone else. David knew that:

Psalm 34:19

19 A righteous man may have many troubles,

….. (NIV)

  1. a) Common Trials Of Life.

All human troubles are ultimately brought about by the entry of sin into the world – when sin entered the order that God’s created was disrupted

Romans 8:22

22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. (NIV)

In a way that we don’t fully understand, the whole universe – even what we call the natural order – is off centre from God’s perfect design.

So famines and floods and disease and death, including in the animal world, are all part of the common trials of life.

a.i) Physical Trials.

In our original state human beings were perfect – physically. Disease and deformity of the body were not part of God’s original design.

Genesis 1:27&31 27 So God created man in his own image,   in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

….. 31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning — the sixth day. (NIV)

God made us perfect in every way by warned that disobedience to his command would bring death.

As a consequence of sin coming into the world – disease, decay, disorder, deformity and ultimately death have become a reality.

Even with all the advances of modern medicine death is still inevitable and no doctor, no matter how brilliant, can ever hope to cure ‘death’

Hebrews 9:27 .. man[humankind] is destined to die…(NIV)

And can often be preceded by the must dreadful suffering – in our comfortable Western society were the control of pain is so effective we forget that this is not so for most of the world and the process of dying can be agonising for many.

James’ readers would have understood this far better than we do.

a.ii) Emotional Trials.

Alternatively we could speak of metal stress – anxiety or fear.

Our doctors will tell us that a large number of their patients have stress related illnesses – sometimes the manifestations are physical symptoms.

In the work place ——-

The pressure is on – productivity – performance related pay – down sizing – restructuring – rationalising – these are some of the buzz words in the business word — the goal is more work with fewer and fewer personnel in order to boost profits.

Those at the sharp end will feel like they can respond to James’ question

13 Is any one of you in trouble? .. (NIV)

“Yes! we are in trouble!”

In the home ———

There is pressure and stress in the home – marriages are stressed [both partners working] – children are stressed [having to perform at school – under pressure from their peers]

In the Church ———-

there can be stress and tensions within Church fellowships

In fact wherever our lives take us there is the potential for emotional stress and tension.

a.iii) Spiritual Trials.

We must remember that it is the spiritual side of humans that make us distinct from the animals.

The spirit world has an effect on the physical and emotional spheres – while we have distinguished these three areas – physical, emotional and spiritual – we must remember that there is a considerable amount of overlap between these three.

The Christian is prone to spiritual trials – not only are Christians going to face the same kinds of trials that everyone else naturally faces BUT we are specific target for the evil one —

Ephesians 6:12 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (NIV)

Sometimes the symptoms may be physical or emotional but the cause is spiritual because the Christian is the constant target of Satan.

As Christians we need to remember that we are not simply up against circumstances, or fate or ‘bad luck’ – we constantly face a powerful, living, intelligent and very devious enemy.

2 Corinthians 11:14 … for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. (NIV)

1 Peter 5:8

8 Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. (NIV)

It is interesting that when Paul writes to Timothy he speak of him ‘..joining with me in the suffering for the gospel ..’ [1 Tim 1:8] — he us using the same basis word that James uses here.

2 Timothy 2:3-9 3 Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. …… This is my gospel, 9 for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God’s word is not chained. (NIV)

2 Timothy 4:5 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry. (NIV)

The implication of Paul’s writing is that there are special troubles associated with committed Christian living and with the proclamation of the gospel. It is this kind of trial or trouble that is because you are a Christian – this is what Jesus referred to as ‘bearing you cross’ –

Sometime we speak of carrying a cross as a tyrannical boss – or nagging wife – or wayward child or difficult mother-in-law — BUT that is not what the Bible means!!

A cross is something that you bear because you are a Christian and something that you would not be bearing if you were not a Christian!!

Read the scriptures – read Church / missionary history – invariably it is those who are godly and who are use by God – when you look at their lives you see suffering of some kind.

James has mentioned the prophets and Job as example of this very point!!

So Christian – what do you do when you are up against it!

THE CHRISTIAN’S RESPONSE

-turn attention to God – Pray!

The meaning of the word that James uses is ‘turn to God’ – when trouble comes the first and most appropriate response for the Christian is to turn to God.

So often we rush around trying to solve the problems ourselves – I am not saying that we should be passive BUT what is our first response? – often look to human resources.

O! what peace we often forfeit

O! what needless pain we bear

All because we do not carry

Everything to God in prayer!

Usually – and understandably – our immediate response to trouble, when we do come to God is to ask him to remove it.

BUT the Bible teaches us that God does not always remove it — and the experience of life tells us that God does not always remove it — at least not immediately.

What God will always do is give us the ability to cope with the trial!

ILLUS.: In 1924 two climbers – Mallory and Irvine – were part of an expedition to try and conquer Mt. Everest. They were both lost in the effort and when the expedition party returned to London – one of the survivor at a meeting in London turn to a huge photograph of Everest mounted on the wall and said–

-”Everest, we tried to conquer you once, but you overpowered us. We tried to conquer you a second time but again you were too much for us. But Everest, I want you to know that we are going to conquer you, for you can’t get any bigger, and we can!”

The spiritual implications are clear – our problems – trouble can never be bigger than God’s ability to help us!

It doesn’t matter how big your troubles are – God is bigger!

Whatever your mountain – turn to God in prayer – he may not remove the mountain – although he sometimes does – but he will certainly give you the strength to conquer.

Habakkuk 3:19

19 The Sovereign LORD is my strength;

he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,

he enables me to go on the heights.

Whatever your Everest you can say to it – “You can’t get any bigger – but I can -because I serve a big God!”

  1. During The Happy Times.

James 5:13…. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. (NIV)

‘happy’ – the word means to be cheerful or ‘in good heart’ but not a kind of superficial euphoria, rather it is a deep sense of well-being.

It is not a word that is often used in the NT but the occasions that it is used give us a good insight into its meaning.

  • Paul before Felix the Roman governor –

Acts 24:10

10 When the governor motioned for him to speak, Paul replied: “I know that for a number of years you have been a judge over this nation; so I gladly make my defence. (NIV)

  • The shipwreck story during Paul’s voyage to Rome

Acts 27:22-36 22 But now I urge you to keep up your courage, because not one of you will be lost; only the ship will be destroyed. …….. 25 So keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God that it will happen just as he told me. …… 36 They were all encouraged and ate some food themselves. (NIV)

It is interesting that in all these usage’s of the word that context is difficult circumstances – in both cases Paul is prisoner – in the one he is face with a tyrant and in the other a raging storm. YET in both there is evident a deep sense of joy and an unshakeable faith in God.

One of the great lies of Satan is to give the impression that being a Christian is a miserable existence – that it is morbid and dreary.

It is certainly not hilariously funny but it should be joyful. Sadly, we Christians sometimes project and image of the Christian life being boring or as the youth would say ‘sad’.

We bemoan that fact the people are not attracted to the gospel – but let me ask you “What kind of an advertisement are you for Christ” “Are you one of those Christian who look as if you have been baptised in lemon juice!!”

The challenge the Church has always faced – and today is no different – is packaging the gospel in a way that is relevant and applicable to its society.

NOW HEAR ME! I am not saying that we must change the gospel – that is unchanging – But much of what passes for the gospel is traditional packaging.

We are not going to reach the 90’s generation with 1950’s packaging – we need to deal with the cringe factor.

People are going to be offended by the gospel – by the claims of Christ – esp. in a pluralistic society that objects to the absolute claims of the gospel – BUT for our part we have to work at making sure that it is the gospel that they are rejecting and not our treasured wrapping paper.

ILLUS.: give a small child a present – often more interested in the wrapping paper than in the contents.

Let us make sure we are not guilty of this!!

God wants us to have a deep inner joy and contentment

1 Timothy 6:17    17 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. (NIV)

Life has its problems and the Bible never tries to hide that – but equally we should have joy in our hearts!

THE CHRISTIAN’S RESPONSE – Turn to God in Praise!

‘songs of praise’ – one words which is the root for the English words ‘Psalms’

The Bible is full of examples of praise – in prayer; singing; musical instruments; clapping; raising hands; dancing.

Psalm 95:1-2

1 Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD;

let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.

2 Let us come before him with thanksgiving

and extol him with music and song. (NIV)

1 Chronicles 16:8-10

8 Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name;

make known among the nations what he has done.

9 Sing to him, sing praise to him;

tell of all his wonderful acts.

10 Glory in his holy name;

let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice. (NIV)

after the ascension —

Luke 24:53 53 And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God. (NIV)

Praise is not just external frivolity – praise in only genuine when it comes from that deep contentment with God.

Conclusion

Whether in hard times or happy times we should turn our attention to God.

Calvin – “ James means that there is no time in which God does not invite us to himself

Not that we have a religious experience to cover every aspect of life BUT we have a God for all the changing scenes of life. To use Alec Motyer’s phrase “A God for all seasons!!

To turn to him in good times and bad times – in times of joy and sorrow – prayer and praise both acknowledge that he is sufficient.

To pray to him is to acknowledge his sovereign power to meets our needs, to praise him is to acknowledge his sovereign power in appointing our circumstances!” [Motyer]

Our whole life needs to be angled towards God so that whatever strikes us is defected into his presence. This is the practical exercise of faith in accepting the will of God for our lives.

In praise – we thank God for what he has done and rejoice!

In prayer – in time of trouble we endeavour to respond like Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane ‘Not my will, but yours be done’.

Prayer and Prayer have this as the foundation -they both say ‘The will of God is good’.

In the hard times – pray!

In the happy times – praise!

Jesus by whom we come to God

The true and living way,

the humble path of prayer you trod,

Lord, teach us how to pray!

James 2:14-26 – Faith – with or without deeds

FAITH – WITH OR WITHOUT DEEDS.

JAMES 2v14 – 26.

INTRODUCTION.

The main topic dealt with in these verses is faith – a very broad concept having a variety of meanings. We speak of the Christian of Muslim Faiths …. of faith as believing something … as placing trust in something or someone … keeping faith as loyalty …..

When the Bible uses the word faith – as here – it is referring to that belief and trust in God that accepts that I am cut off from God by nature but because God is merciful and gracious, on the basis that Jesus Christ died for me, I can have a personal relationship with God. So my faith is in God’s ability and willingness to rescue me from spiritual death [cut off from God] and to give me spiritual life [bring me into a personal relationship with God].

The teaching of the Bible is that salvation is a gift from God and is received by faith alone. We do not deserve salvation – we cannot earn it

– it is all God’s work

– we simply receive it from God as a gift.

How does this square with the passage before us?

James 2:17-26

17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. ……….

20 You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless?…..

24 You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone.

…26 As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead. (NIV)

Because of these verses many have said that James is at odds with apostle Paul and that there is a fundamental contradiction within the NT.

Helpful comparison of Paul and James on this issue!!

ISSUE PAUL JAMES
Faith is God’s foundational gift Ephesians 2:8 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God —

James 2:5

5 ..Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? (NIV)

Faith is the common mark of all Christians Galatians 3:26

26 You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, (NIV)

James 2:1

1 My brothers, as believers [those who have faith in] in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don’t show favouritism.

The thread running through the Christian life 1 Timothy 6:12 12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses. (NIV)

James 2:22 22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. (NIV)

The root from which good works grow Titus 3:8 8 This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good.

James 2:22 22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. (NIV)

There is fundamental agreement between Paul and James on how we receive salvation – they also agree as to how that salvation should show itself in our lives.

We need to carefully look at this passage to see that James is not saying that works are more important than faith or that faith and work are needed in equal portions in order for us to receive salvation from God.

  1. A CLAIM TO FAITH!

James 2:14 What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? (NIV)

When he says .. Can such faith save him? .. he is not saying that faith cannot save a person. Look carefully at the verse — this hypothetical person is claiming to have faith — it claiming to be a Christian — James is saying that claiming to have faith is not the same as having it — people make claims about many things but not all are genuine.

ILLUS.: “Some one has said “If you were accused of being a Christian would there be enough evidence to convict you!”

This is the issue that James is addressing – faith must be followed by action otherwise we must question the claim to faith!

James now gives 4 illustrations:

– the one who claims faith yet neglects to help a fellow Christian.

– the demons

– Abraham – the father of faith

– Rahab – a Caananite prostitute

The first two are example of faith without deeds and the last two of faith with works.

  1. CONTRASTING AN ARMCHAIR ‘BELIEVER’ AND AN ACTION BELIEVER.

Taking the first and last illustration.

James 2:15-26 15 Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

…………

25…., was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? 26 As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead. (NIV)

The first situation is clear fellow a Christian is in need materially and this armchair Christian does nothing to help – and we must assume that this person is in a position to help.

The second situation – Rahab – After God had rescue the Hebrew nation out of slavery in Egypt – and after their 40 year desert wanderings they were brought to the land of Canaan – present day Israel/ Palestine. When Hebrew spies were sent into the land Rahab who lived in Jericho – the first city to be attacked hid and rescued the spies at great risk to herself. It seems evident that this Caananite prostitute had already identified herself with God’s people.

v17 and v26 makes it quite clear that faith which does not produce good deeds it not simply deficient or lagging behind but is dead. The claim to faith that simply pats a hungry, cold person on the back and says “There, there everything will be fine – go your way and God bless you” – such faith is no faith at all!!

Rahab by contrast, when faced with fellow believers who were in need put her house, her resources and her personal safety on the line.

I wonder what James would say to us today – if he looked at the world in which we live – ‘Ah! there are very few people in Godalming who are poor and hungry’ – but there are thousands and thousands of Christians around the world [ millions if we consider our brothers and sisters as the family of humankind] – who today are hungry and sick and cold and suffering – while the church in the West is fat and comfortable.

If James were looking at us today would he see a living, vibrant faith – ‘What can we do to care for the world’s millions?’ – not a lot!! — but we can exert pressure on governments and agencies who could – ‘They won’t listen to me!!’ — have you tried have you written to your MP??

God will hold the rich nations to account – It is a fact that there is enough food to feed the world – millions go to bed hungry while mountains of butter, meat, fruit and grain are destroyed in the name of profits and shareholders and governments spent billions on weapons of mass-destruction!!

But it come much closer than that !! – What of the neighbour who has lost a loved one? Have you visited?

The old lady who is alone? have you popped in for a chat?

The disaffected teenager whose music is too loud for your liking? Have you made an effort to befriend her??

The kind of faith that stops with words is worthless! What we believe is important – our creed is important but a creed without caring is like a body without breathe – it is dead!!

Listen to Job on this

Job 31:16-22 16 “If I have denied the desires of the poor or let the eyes of the widow grow weary, 17 if I have kept my bread to myself, not sharing it with the fatherless — — 19 if I have seen anyone perishing for lack of clothing, or a needy man without a garment, 20 and his heart did not bless me for warming him with the fleece from my sheep, 21 if I have raised my hand against the fatherless, knowing that I had influence in court, 22 then let my arm fall from the shoulder, let it be broken off at the joint. (NIV)

Job was a giant of faith yet he understood exactly what James is talking about.

  1. CONTRASTING TWO TYPES OF BELIEVERS.

James 2:18-24

18 But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.”

Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do. 19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that — and shudder.

20 You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? 21 Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. 23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend. 24 You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone. (NIV)

V18 seems to give the crux of the argument going on between some of James’ readers -, “You have faith; I have deeds.”

John Blanchard puts it like this “You have a great concern for doctrine and theology; you place a great emphasis on ‘faith’, on being quite sure of what you believe. Well, that’s fine, but I am what you would call a practical Christian. For me Christianity mean trying to live up to the Ten Commandments and the sermon on the mount. But surely we are both right? We are just different kinds of Christians that is all. Your Christianity majors on things you believe, mine majors on things I do. surely there is room for both of us.”

James’s response to such an argument is this ‘You say you have faith – very well show me without any deeds!! It is not possible! The absence of deeds proves the absence of faith!

What is the kind of faith the James is talking about??

His illustrations about demons and Abraham clarify the point!!

The demons.

It would seem that there were those who were saying ‘I believe in God therefore I must be OK’ – James takes the fundamental Jewish [and also Christian] belief that there is only one God Deuteronomy 6:4

4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. (NIV)

Good!! this is an essential belief BUT if you think intellectual assent to the exist of God is enough then think again – even the devils believe that.

There are a number of occasions in the life of Jesus were the demons recognised him for who he was :-

Matthew 8:29 29 “What do you want with us, Son of God?” they [the Demons]shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?” (NIV)

Mark 1:24 24 “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are — the Holy One of God!” (NIV)

Mark 3:11 11 Whenever the evil spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.” (NIV)

These emphasise the point James is making ‘there are no atheists in Hell’ [Blanchard]

They might believe in God BUT they do not know the peace of God, they do not experience God’s love – they are not saved – they remain demons opposed to everything God is! YET the are terrified – they shudder – they know the consequences of their rejection of God – they know that they are cut off from God forever — And the same fate awaits all you reject God’s offer of salvation.

There will be terror and sorrow and regret – hell will be full of people saying “If only ..” “I heard about Jesus Christ IF ONLY I had believed …” “I remember my friend of that preacher telling me how I could get right with God IF ONLY I had listen …”

The Bible tells us that Today is the day of salvation – this is God’s era for salvation – when this life is over it will be too late!

Abraham

From demons to Abraham – the one who is called the father of faith –

Remember that James is not challenging the person who claims to be a Christian and is doing good works – He is challenging the person who claims to be a Christian and in whose life there is an absence of good deeds.

The story of Abraham is well recorded in the book of Genesis – God calls Abraham to follow him [Gen 12] – God promised that Abraham would have a son through whom descendants would be a numerous as stars in the sky – and in Gen.15 we read that Abraham believe God – trust him – took him at his word – James is quoting from Genesis in v23 James 2:23 23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend. (NIV)

After having waited for 25 years for the son to be born – when he is a young lad God tells Abraham to sacrifice him as a burnt offering – [Gen 22] After having arrived at the place where that sacrifice was to take place listen to the words of Abraham to his servants —Genesis 22:5 5 He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while we [I and the boy] go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.” (NIV)

WE will go … we will worship … and we will return.   BUT between the 2nd ‘we’ and the 3rd ‘we’ the boy Isaac, was supposed to be killed and burned to ashes. But Abraham believed that God was true to his word and would if necessary even raise the boy from the ashes.

Abraham’s willingness to act – to do what God had asked him to do was the evidence of the faith that was in his heart.

This is James’s argument – because Abraham believed God he was willing to put his faith into action. James is not saying that Abraham was justified before God because he was willing to sacrifice his son but that he obedience was evidence that he already believed. Some 35 years earlier Abraham had believed God and God had justified him.

Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son for God [which God stopped] was a clear picture of God’s willingness to sacrifice his Son – [Jesus] – on the cross so that everyone including Abraham and you and I could be saved. Jesus was no reluctant sacrifice – he laid down his life because he loved us!

BUT James readers might be thinking – ‘Abraham was a great hero of the faith these things don’t applied to us in the same way!’ – So James adds Rahab as another example of faith and deeds.

ABRAHAM RAHAB
a major Bible character a minor character
father of the faithful a foreigner
respected in the community a person of disrepute
a man a woman

James covers the whole spectrum!

It does matter whether or not you come from the top of bottom of the social barrel! It does not matter what your past is! God’s grace reaches all!

But having been justified by God there needs to be evidence that you are a believer – Listen to Rahab’s words to the spies Joshua 2:11 …….the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below. (NIV)

Her confession was the same as the demons and the armchair Christian – there is one God – BUT was it her confession that proved she was a genuine believer?? NO!! She was considered righteous because of what she did!! -as was Abraham!

What kind of faith is James arguing for –   – Not faith instead of deeds

– Not deeds instead of faith

– Not deeds above faith

– Not faith and deeds equally

– BUT Genuine faith produces good deeds!!

The outworking of our faith is obedience to the word of God and that is seen practically in our concern for the needs of other people – not just their spiritual needs but their physical and emotional needs as well.

Faith is God is not measured by some decision we made in the past – How do you know that your faith is genuine?? What are you doing??

Our confession and our conduct must agree.

James 2:8-13 – The royal law of love

THE ROYAL LAW OF LOVE.

James 2:8-13.

INTRODUCTION.

From the first 7 verses of chapter 2 we are left in no doubt that God is on the side of the poor, the disadvantaged, the widows and the orphans. In vv 2 – 4 James gave a clear illustration of favouring the rich simply because they are rich and discriminating against the poor simply because they are poor.

ILLUS.: The discrimination against the black people in SA is well known – they were marginalised simply because they were black. As things have changed over the last few years things have began to go the other way – Now white – esp., white males, are discriminated against simply because they are white. While it is understandable it doesn’t make it right.

Discrimination against anyone purely on the basis of their skin colour is wrong!

And so when we come to James – discrimination purely on the basis of a person financial state is equally wrong!

If we take James’ illustration to its logical conclusion we would be discriminating against the rich just because they are rich . That is why we must go beyond the illustration of vv 2 – 4 and get to the principle of verse 8 viz., ‘fulfil the royal law …’

  1. WHAT THE ROYAL LAW DEMANDS. [v8]

James 2:8

8 If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbour as yourself,” you are doing right. (NIV)

The Christian and the Law – it might be helpful to look at this briefly – We tend to think that this command ‘love your neighbour as yourself’ originated in the NT. However, this royal law according to v8 was found in scripture – What scripture? It is not the NT because that was not complete nor was it recognised as scripture at the time. When Jesus said ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’ he was quoting from Lev 19:18.

Are Christians therefore under the law? If we look at the OT and the history of Israel – God chose Abraham, he developed them into a nation, rescued them from slavery in Egypt and only then did he reveal the law to them.

The same God who is a redeemer is also a lawgiver, ‘Grace comes first then law follows’ [Motyer]. This is spiritual logic – first we experience God’s grace in redemption and then we should want to know how to live in order to please our redeemer.

Always bear in mind that obedience is responsive and not a way of trying to gain God’s favour. When we move from the OT to the NT the same principle applies – we experience the grace of God in salvation and then he puts the Holy Spirit in us and writes his law on our hearts.

Jeremiah 31:31-34 31 “The time is coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them,” declares the LORD. 33 “This is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after that time,” declares the LORD. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34 No longer will a man teach his neighbour, or a man his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the LORD. “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” (NIV)

Why is it royal?

There is a sense in which it is the ‘king of laws’ – the most important law – although we could debate that as Jesus put ‘love the Lord your God’ before it, it is only of secondary importance.

It seems to me that James calls it ‘royal’ because this law was given a special place in Biblical Law by Jesus himself. It has been endorsed by the King – not that he didn’t endorse all the Law but he considered this to encapsulate that part of the law which tells us how to behave towards others.

‘Love your neighbour as yourself’

It would be fair to assume that James’ readers were not treating all their neighbours as themselves BUT only a selected few. James is not saying we should not recognise a distinction between rich and poor – the distinction is there – one is rich and the other is poor!!

BUT the difference in peoples status should not determine how we treat them.

The Bible sets a high standard as to how we should treat other – we are to act towards them in a way that brings about their greatest good regardless of —

– who they are

– of what the believe

– of how they behave

– of their attitudes or actions towards us — that does not mean that we only do for people what they like – because our primary responsibility is towards God – BUT we are to treat them in a way that is right before God.

This does not mean that we will be popular with everyone! Often doing what is right get an adverse reaction from people!

ILLUS.:

In the office insisting that you will not deal dishonestly may make you unpopular in an enviroment where shady dealing is practiced.

Humanly speaking it may not seem like the loving thing to do but before God it is because it is right.

  1. WHAT THE ROYAL LAW DEPLORES. [V9]

James 2:9 9 But if you show favouritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as law-breakers. (NIV)

James commends them in v8 – if you keep the royal law you do well but – v9 – if you show favouritism you commit sin!

James holds out that the opposite of the royal law is the sin of partiality. And while the one enjoys God’s blessing the other incurs God’s anger.

ILLUS.: [from Motyer] In the OT – Deut. 27 – after Israel had entered the Promised Land they were commanded to go to two mountains – Ebal and Gerizim and there to identify these with the law of God. On Mt. Gerizim the blessing promised to the obedient were recited. On Mt. Ebal the curse promised to the disobedient were recited. The people could not escape their obligation to obey God’s law any more that they could remove these two mountains.

Here in James are the Christians Gerizim and Ebal – the royal law ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’ and the sin of partiality.

It is easy to say ‘love your neighbour’ but it is infinitely more difficult to practise.

The world is full of needy people and we have far more neighbour than we can possibly care for!! What are we to do??

  • we each need to discover what God has called us to do. Out their is a world full of people who are my neighbours. Where has God place me? What are my gifts? How best can I fulfil God will?

  • we must understand that our callings are different –         : Nancy MacElroy – living in a mud hut amongst the Maasai of Kenya – that is her calling – not everyone can do that – I am not guilty about that fact that I don’t live in a mud hut.

  • We must support others in their calling – part of our calling is to support others in theirs – thus we as a Church support the Smalls in Paris – the Stanfords in Burkina Faso – and others — should involve not just money but other kinds of support as well.

It is all too easy to say ‘It is not my calling’ and to use that as a cop out – often ending up doing little towards your neighbour!!

Favouritism or partiality is not just a weakness it is an offence to God!!

  1. WHAT THE ROYAL LAW DECLARES [V10 – 11]

(You can’t choose which laws to obey!)

James 2:10-11 10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. 11 For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a law-breaker. (NIV)

Is James saying that if you break one law you are therefore guilty of breaking every other law? No! I don’t think so!

ILLUS.: Someone you steals a chocolate bar from the corner shop is not a murderer!

To use the examples James uses – an adulterer is not a murderer.

However, what James is saying is that the law of God is a whole – it is a unified entity. So whether you break law ‘A’ or law ‘Q’ or law ‘X’ in one sense is irrelevant because you have broken the law and consequently are a law breaker!

ILLUS.: Two weeks ago we were on my Uncle’s farm – it brought back many childhood memories. One of which is that on many occasions I was called upon to help round up the cattle which had broken through a paddock fence.

It was irrelevant on which side of the paddock the fence was broken – the point is that it was broken!!

When we look at the law of God in this way we ALL stand guilty! If we want to be justified before God on the basis of keeping God’s law then we need to keep every last detail of it perfectly!!

Galatians 3:10

10 All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.” (NIV)

ILLUS.: a chain can be perfect except for one link ?!?! – it is broken.

A car tyre can be perfect except for one tiny hole ?!?! – it is punctured – does it matter where??

But even taking the examples of murder and adultery – which of us is not guilty! Maybe not the physical act —-BUT

Matthew 5:21-28

21 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment……..

27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. (NIV)

Before the law of God we stand condemned!!

Listen to the Psalmist

Psalm 143:2 2 Do not bring your servant into judgment, for no-one living is righteous before you. (NIV)

Psalm 130:3 3 If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? (NIV)

The answer — NO ONE!!

As Christians we were not saved by keeping the law – so now we are not kept by obeying the law – it is by God’s grace and mercy alone!

Philippians 3:9 9 …….., not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ — the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith. (NIV)

If you are trying to gain acceptance with God by living a good life – forget it!! – you can’t do it that way. God calls ALL people EVERYWHERE to repent and trust Jesus Christ.

If you are a believer then ask God for more grace to empower you to obey him!

We often tend to think of God’s laws as a bind – as a hindrance – as if God is ‘kill-joy’ – obeying God is the greatest freedom there is!

If you have drifted away from God – your heart is cold towards him – maybe you are here out of duty — habit — duress — maybe you would rather be on the Golf-course or gardening — There is a joy in serving Jesus that surpasses all other pleasure BUT so often we miss out because our hearts are cold or as best luke-warm!!

  1. WHAT THE ROYAL LAW DEMONSTRATES. [v12-13]

James 2:12-13

12 Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, 13 because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment! (NIV)

Law and liberty.

To speak of the law and liberty would seems, to many, to be a contradiction in terms. To most people the word ‘law’ conjures up imagines of restrictions and limits, cramping your style and removing your freedom.

ILLUS.: When motor cars became widely used by the public many of the advertisement of the time exploited the fact that this new method of transport drought a new found freedom. BUT they soon discovered that unless there were laws to governs this ‘freedom’ there could be no freedom of travel.

Can you imagine Britain without traffic laws – everyone free to ‘do their own thing’!

These traffic laws were introduced to enhance this new found freedom of the road.

When the Israelites come out of Egypt God gave them the law [Ex.20] – it marked the end of an old bondage not the beginning of a new one – the law was given to mark their new freedom AND so that they could enjoy their new freedom.

In our generation their has been a push for personal freedom in the area of drugs and sex and so on – but far from bringing liberty these so-called freedoms usually bring bondage.

People demand the ‘freedom to be themselves’ – but people are made in the image of God and they will never known real freedom until they are what God intended them to be. It is only in knowing God and living by his laws that we will ever discover true freedom! And discover our true selves! Only then are we being and doing what we were designed to be and do.

ILLUS. Going back to the illustration of the car – when you try to drive through a forest or down a cliff we come unstuck –or get stuck!!

The car only brings freedom when we stick to the rules! In life we only experience freedom when we stick to God’s rules.

The rule that is being emphasised here is ‘loving you neighbour’ – our words and our deeds “…speak and act …” – must be in line with this royal rule because it is by this law that we will be judged!!

Judgement and Mercy.

You and I know that we fail again and again – and we would have all given up long ago were it not for the mercy of God!

But a word about judgement first. The law of God is fixed and does not change because God does not change. And by God’s law every person will be judged.

Matthew 25:31-32

31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. (NIV)

2 Corinthians 5:10 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, ……. (NIV)

Hebrews 4:13 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. (NIV)

God’s justice is not selective everyone is included!

Some will be asking —

-What about babies [the children of Dunblane?]

– What about those who have never heard the gospel?

We tie ourselves in knots with these questions – the Bible tells us that God’s law is perfect. When Abraham was pleading with God for the people of Sodom he makes a statement that is pivotal to our understanding of God’s judgement – Genesis 18:25 25 ……… Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?” (NIV)

This would be a depressing end – because we all deserve God’s judgement – BUT it is not the end.

Mercy – “Mercy triumphs over judgement” – the mercy of God is seen in the cross of Jesus who took our judgement and offered us mercy.

[A Barnes] “In the plans of salvation .. respect is done to justice, but mercy triumphs. Justice demands, as what is due, that the sinner should be condemned; mercy pleads that [he] the sinner may be saved – and mercy prevails!” [from Motyer p.104]

Are we merciful to others? or are we judgmental? Do we show favouritism and relate to other on the basis of what we can gain in return — these and many more questions will flood our minds as we compare ‘what we should be with what we actually are’.

James directs us away from self-questioning – we will not find mercy there – and he turns us to God “Mercy triumphs over judgement”

Motyer – “In the cross of Christ justice is fully done, its claims are fully met and God’s mercy to sinners triumphed in the provision of a complete forgiveness and a full salvation ………….

…….. Judgement looks at our deserts; mercy at our needs. And God himself looks at the cross of His Son.”

Praise God for Jesus!

James 2:1-7 – The foolishness of favouritism

THE FOOLISHNESS OF FAVOURITISM!

James 2:1-7.

****************************************************************

INTRODUCTION.

The letter of James is considered to be one of the most practical books in the Bible – his teaching does not allow too much room for vague interpretations that can easy get lost in pious platitudes. However it would be a mistake to think that the letter of James is not theological – sometimes he has been accused of this.

The foundational verse of James’ letter is James 1:18 18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created. (NIV)

This letter does major on the practical outworking of our faith but the underlying assumption upon which James builds is that God is sovereign and everything good – esp. our salvation – is a gift from God. James 1:17 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. (NIV)

1:26-27 are link verses between Ch.1, which lays a foundation, and the rest of the letter which deals with care, speech and holiness!

For James, “to claim to have the life of God and to remain unchanged is unthinkable”. [Motyer]

In other words if your belief and your behaviour don’t match up then there is something wrong. He is dealing not only with individual belief and practice but also the belief and practice of the whole church!

An old Negro Christian “There are too sides to the gospel, a believing side and a behaving side!”

One of the first practical issue that he comes to deal with is favouritism or discrimination.

Let’s look first at verse 2-4 and we will come back to v.1 in a moment!

  1. FAVOURITISM: AN EXAMPLE [v.2 – 4]

James 2:2-4 2 Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in. 3 If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” 4 have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? (NIV)

The world of James’ day was made up of the same kind of people as there are in the world today – the ‘haves’ and the have nots’. The main difference is that in his day the ‘have nots’ were mostly slaves – but certainly not all – many were simply poor people. The gap between the rich and poor was very big and it was the rich who had the power – what’s changed!!

In our society at least there is a reasonably fair legal system and a social system that helps the poor – [that does not mean that there is no poverty in England] !

The illustration James gives is very clear – When a rich person comes to the church meeting he is given a prominent seat and when a poor person enters he is told to stand or sit on the floor.

This is blatant discriminatory behaviour – At a lesser level is happens in the classroom with Teacher’s pet, at its worst level it manifests itself in ethnic cleansing in Bosnia, in Hilter holocaust, in SA Aparthied …. at this level it can destroy nations.

When one child is favoured at the expense of another it can destroy families.

And when it happens in a Church it can destroy a congregation and that is why James is so hard on his readers. Favouritism and discrimination are destructive.

James is not saying that there is not room for treating some people differently – For example– it would be proper and right to offer a seat to an elderly person and to ask a younger person to sit on the floor if there are too few seats — It would be perfectly in order to seat an honoured guest – e.g. the Queen – while asking others to stand.

What James is on about is favouring one person over another purely on the basis that he or she is dressed better and thus is perceived to be of more worth. Such favouritism is flattery usually with the motive of gaining some benefit. Flattery is very subtle but it ends up deceiving the flatterer and the one being flattered.

— reveals contradictory behaviour

The NIV translates v4 as follows have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?

This translation does seem to fit the context very well and nor does it reflect the Greek text very accurately.

It would seem that these two people who have walked into the church are strangers and that is why they are invited to be seated. Thus it would not be a discrimination amongst themselves but between to visitors.

Further and more importantly the phrase would fit better if it read … wavered/ been inconsistent within yourselves …. One of the main points that James is making in his letter is that as Christians we must be consistent. We can’t claim to be Christian on the one hand and then act like the worldly snob on the other hand. You can’t face both ways at once and that is the import of the text here.

— reveals corrupt motives

Not only is such behaviour inconsistent but it reveal the inner character that is corrupt. Why do people show favouritism? – is it not because there is an underlying motive? And that motive is invariably selfish – flattery usually has a price tag!

Flattery is praise insincerely given for an interested purpose” [Henry Ward Beecher]

Many people know how to flatter but few know how to give genuine praise!

Verse 1 gives us the real reason why favouritism is wrong.

  1. FAVOURITISM IS INCONSISTENT WITH BELIEF IN CHRIST [v.1]

1 My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don’t show favouritism.

My brothers – [a generic term referring to all Christian believers] –

Our whole faith teaches us that we should never be a snob in anyway – we have no reason to consider ourselves better than anyone else – if anyone ever had any reason to consider himself better than anyone else then it was Jesus himself. YET his glory was seen in the fact that he never judged people by outward appearance – he is the one to whom all glory is due AND he is also the one who set the standard as to how we are to treat others.

2 Corinthians 8:9 9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich. (NIV)

If we claim to be believers then the question is, are we completely devoted to the Lord in the ups and downs of life? — does his glory come first on our value scale??

Or do we allow the standard and values of the world to dictate what is valuable and worth-while!

Lets face it – in the world in which we live most people are valued in economic terms – people are no longer customers – we are consumers – how much money can be made!! Profits become more important than people!!

This was the trap that James’ readers were falling into – and it is easy to fall into this even in the Church.

ILLUS.: Richie Rich is a good prospective members because if he joins the Church we could probably put on a new roof or build a new Hall!!

It happens – I have seen Church where a few wealthy families control the Church and there is a power block and the people are too afraid to say or do anything because – “What will happen to the Budget if Mr Rich leaves??!”

Not just about money —

ILLUS.: Church I was involved with when we where missionaries to the Asian Muslims in SA – Did not want any convert to come to the Church – come to visit as exhibits of their investment in missions but not as members because they were too different – “They need their own church!” – The disguise was what was good for them but the real reason was “We don’t want these Asian people in our Church!” HAPPILY NOT ALL MEMBERS AND NOT ALL CHURCHES WERE LIKE THIS!

We need to guard against such behaviour – it is easy to be resentful and stand-offish to newcomers because they are different and will change our church!!

When a Church begins to operate like this then it is acting contrary to the principles of the gospel and it reasoning is distorted and sinful. And far from Christ been glorified his name is dishonoured.

Peter and Cornielius – Cornielius told 1x – Peter 3x [vision]

Acts 10:34

34 Then Peter began to speak: “I now realise how true it is that God does not show favouritism (NIV)

  1. FAVOURITISM HAS LIMITED VISION [V. 6 – 7]

James 2:6-7 6 But you have insulted the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court? 7 Are they not the ones who are slandering the noble name of him to whom you belong? (NIV)

We will come back to v.5 in a moment!

James’ readers were pandering to the rich and power.

Imagine the situation – a poor person has borrowed money from a rich person – in those day the repayment of the money could be demanded and if they were unable to pay then off to the debtors jail until they could pay –

See why James says to his readers – this are the ones exploiting you —

– taking you to court —-

– and by acting in this way they are dishonouring the name of Christ whom you claim to honour!

And what is more by favouring the rich in this way you are insulting the poor who in God’s eyes are of equal worth. The two visitors to the congregation [v.2-3] are seen only in the immediate context of their material possessions or lack of them. Whenever a church falls into this trap – if we fall into this trap we immediately exclude from our fellowship, our worship any whom we consider to be below our station.

James is talking about favouritism on the grounds of wealth but it can also manifest itself in other areas —

Education – “Did now she only went to ‘Scrap-through College!”

Social background – “Well I heard that he comes from the other side of the                                                 railway line – A bit of the old tar-brush I believe!”

Intellect – “She is a little bit slow!!”

Theologically we can play the same kind of games —

She is a little bit TOO Charismatic when in actual fact she is alive spiritually and has an enthusiasm for Jesus that I lack – while I flounder around in my theological correctness!”

Is James saying that all the rich people are like this and have no place in the church – not at all!!!

But he is only echoing what Jesus said that it is hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven because hits at their position and their pockets and their pride.

God’s way is contrary to the way of the world!

  1. FAVOURITISM IS NOT GOD’S WAY [v.5]

James 2:5

5 Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? (NIV)

ILLUS.: As a child I grew up in a street of 12 houses and their were in all about 35 kids – our street was next to the school playing fields and almost every afternoon we would gather there for some game or other. Two Captains would choose teams – always from the most athletic and competent down to the least able.

That is how human chose usually goes!

But God’s ways are not our ways – he is not impressed by wealth or position or education or ability.

God chooses the poor of this world – does that mean that he does not choose the rich? Not al all! We only have to look through scripture to see that God does choose the rich. Abraham was a wealthy man – so was Job! What of Joseph of Arimathea and Zacchaeus. But it is true that we need to search these out – remember what Paul said to the Corinthians 1 Corinthians 1:26

26 Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. (NIV)

When James says that God chooses the poor – he does not mean that he never chooses the rich AND when he says that the rich exploit the poor and dishonour the name of Christ he does not mean they the poor never do BUT he is stating a general principle.

It is generally true that God’s concern is for those at the bottom of the world’s heap.

God chose Israel – slaves in Egypt and an insignificant group of people in the world of the time.

Time and time again we see how God rescues the poor and the stranger and the widows and orphans. He instructs Israel again and again to care for the poor, the oppressed and disadvantaged in society.

Exodus 22:22

22 “Do not take advantage of a widow or an orphan. (NIV)

Isaiah 1:17 17 learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow. (NIV)

When Jesus was on earth – where was his heart – with the sinners and the tax-collectors and the poor and the prostitutes. It was these people who followed him – It was the rich and powerful who opposed him with very few exceptions.

If we would follow the Lord Jesus Christ then like him we must, for the most part be on the side of the poor, the underprivileged, the disadvantaged and the oppressed. WHY? Because we follow a theology of liberation or a social gospel? NO! All to often evangelicals have allowed the liberals to rob us of our social responsibilities. We must have this conviction because God is a holy God and he hates injustice!!

If God practised favouritism where would I be? where would you be?

If God choose people according to Wealth and social standing where would you and I be?

Listen again to Paul — 1 Corinthians 1:26-29

26 Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things — and the things that are not — to nullify the things that are, 29 so that no-one may boast before him. (NIV)

God does not show favouritism – his choice is without regard to gifts or goodness or anything else. This is abundantly clearly when we read Ephesians 1:4 4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.

ILLUS.: Spurgeon – “It is perfectly obvious that God chose me, because I would never have chosen him, and it is equally clear that he must have chosen me before I was born because he would not have chosen me afterwards!”

I know that God’s choosing is difficult to understand!

But I can hear someone saying, “But didn’t I choose God??” Yes and it was a free chose BUT only because in eternity past God had first chosen you.

BUT you say, “Don’t I have a free will?” YES!! But not in the sense that we are completely free because apart from God all people are captive to sin. BUT nevertheless we were able to choose God because God has made that chose possible.

There is a clear command in scripture for the unsaved to respond to God’s call – it is clear that people have a responsibility to exercise the will God has given them .

YET it is also clear that no-one responds to Christ who has not been chosen by God.

Jesus in John’s gospel puts both these truths in one sentence: 6 37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.

God sovereignly elects AND people have a responsibility to exercise their chose – these two things may seem irreconcilable to our puny minds BUT what we must not do is try to pick one or the other NOR must we compromise to some kind of middle ground. Both of these are true – God does elect and people are responsible to believe in Christ – we must hold these two truths in tension.

Why did God chose us?? God’s election of Israel in the OT gives us insight into why God chooses.

Deuteronomy 7:7-8

7 The LORD did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. 8 But it was because the LORD loved you and kept the oath he swore to your forefathers that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. (NIV)

Why did God chose Israel?? Because he loved them – WHY? Because they were better; stronger; more numerous than the other nations?? NO!! NO!! Because he loved them and because he chose to love them.

Why has God chosen us? Because we are better?? hardly!! Because we are more loveable?? NO! NO!

ILLUS.: “The story is told of a man who told his minister that he had difficulty understanding God’s statement: ’Jacob I loved and Esau and Esau I hated!’ (Rom.9:13) The minister agreed that the verse was difficult to understand and asked the man where his particular problem lay. He said ‘In the second half of course!’.

Well my difficulty has always been with the first part,’ the minister replied, ‘because I can’t possibly understand how God could love a crafty, dishonest scoundrel like Jacob’.”

Look at the reason God chose us!   – to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him –

There are many who are rich in this world but poverty-stricken spiritually – Christian think of what you have received in Christ! Paul tells us that we are blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ –

True riches are not measured in £ and pennies – What is your heavenly Bank account like – are you rich towards God. If you are a Christian then all the riches of heaven are yours – how do we know that — Romans 8:32 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all — how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? (NIV)

That includes that present blessings and the future glory of heaven!!

CONCLUSION.

Jesus who is rich in glory came to the poorest level so the we could be rich. If our faith is in him how then should we treat others!

V7 ends by referring to Christians as those who belong to the noble name of Christ –

The common marriage custom is that a woman takes her husband’s surname indicating an intimate, personal and permanent relationship – As Christians we take Christ’s name – how we behave reflects on him AND what belongs to him belongs to us!

God help us to live in such a way that our believing side and our behaving side match up!

Colossians 1:9-14 – Lessons from Paul’s prayer for the Colossians

LESSONS FROM PAUL’S PRAYER FOR THE COLOSSIANS.

Colossians 1:9-14

INTRODUCTION.

If we went around the church and asked each one how he/she learned to pray – privately and esp. out loud in a small group or in church – we would probably discover that most of us learned by listening to others and then praying in a similar way.

This is true not only of the style of praying i.e. the language used, but also the content of our prayers.

This in itself is not necessarily a bad thing – in fact it can be a good thing provided that the model followed is a good one!

What we know about God has a profound influence on our prayers – we learn about God from the scriptures and this affects our praying – the deeper our grasp of the scriptures the greater influence it will have on our praying.

Something that is of great benefit is to study the prayers of scripture – Moses argued with God; David sang praises in pray; Solomon’s wonderful broad-visionary prayer at the dedication of the temple; Nehemiah…; Jeremiah …; Mary …; Jesus himself …; and then Paul… .

Let’s look at Paul’s prayer for the Colossians!

What requests and petitions does Paul make for these Colossian Christians?

Are the petitions that we present to God in line with what Paul prays for?

What do we most ask God for? – good health, recovery from illness, a good job, safety on the roads, success for our children/grandchildren, help with studies,…?

Is the central focus of our prayers similar to that of the Apostle’s? Or has the secularisation of our lives made our prayers parochial, self-centred and earth-bound?

What are some of the lesson we can learn from Paul?

  1. PAUL PRAYS FOR THOSE HE HAS NOT PERSONALLY MET.

Colossians 1:9

9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you ..

Paul is writing to a Church that he has never visited – the church was probably planted by Epaphras – it is likely that Epaphras came to know Christ through the ministry of Paul at Ephesus.

BUT having never visited them Paul assures the Christians at Colossae that he is praying for them. He has added them to his prayer list and is interested in their spiritual well-being!

How extensive is our praying?

Are our petitions about our families, our Church, our needs and our circle of friends? — of course we need to pray for these things!! BUT if that is the extent of our praying we become parochial and turned in. Our world is then very small and very selfish!!

Of course we can’t pray for everyone in the world – specifically – by name! BUT we need to focus on and pray for parts of the world that we have never visited!

As a Church we do – I know that some do privately – we each need to evaluate this area of our prayer life! Are we doing this? and if we are how can we do better?

This kind of praying is a crucial element of our expression of the Church at large – it helps to enlarge our horizons, increase our ministry and help us become world Christians. {D A Carson}

  1. PAUL PRAYS FOR THEM UNCEASINGLY.

Colossians 1:9

9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you

Does this mean that Paul is permanatly on his knees in prayer? Is this some exaggarated boast? NO! Paul is simply saying that he prays for them on a regular basis – He says a similar thing in —

Romans 1:9-10 9 God, whom I serve with my whole heart in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you 10 in my prayers at all times; and I pray that now at last by God’s will the way may be opened for me to come to you. (NIV)

Paul is saying that in his regular, disciplined times of prayer he makes it his business to bring them to God in prayer.

There are things that we need to ask God for again and again and again!

There are some blessings from God that we need constantly and as we ask constantly so he provides constantly!

ILLUS. We give thanks for our food at meals. Jesus also taught us to ask daily for our food.

Is it not equally true therefore that we should constantly be asking God to mature us spiritually as well as our fellow Christians.

This constant, unceasing prayer of Paul for the Colossians and others serves as an encouragement to us to learn to be persisitent in our prayers.

  1. PAUL PRAYS FOR THEIR FILLING WITH THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD’S WILL.

Colossians 1:9

9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.

What does Paul mean by – the knowledge of his [GOD’S] will – frequently we use this term “The Will of God” with reference to my life, my future, my career, …. We seek the Lord’s will with regard to who we should marry, what job we should take, which town to live in…… This is not a bad thing!!! It is good – we need God’s guidance in these matters!

However, this focus can be misleading – if it encourages us to think of the Lord’s will primarily in term of my needs, my future, my career, and so on. It can ofetn end up as another form of self-centredness>> . Not only that BUT it distorts the dominant way in which the Bible speaks about the will of God.

Consider

Psalm 143:10    10 Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level                  ground. (NIV)

The Psalmist here makes obeying God’s commands almost the same as knowing God’s will. What God has decreed is his will and it is our responsibility to do it.

NB the psalmist does not say – Teach me your will – BUT – Teach me to do your will – He assumes that God’s will is already known.

Romans 12:2 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will. (NIV)

The more our minds grasp the truth of God’s Word, the more our character and behaviour is molded by what God thinks, the more we will know and practise God’s will.

Ephesians 5:15-17

15 Be very careful, then, how you live — not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. (NIV)

God’s will can never be reduce to merely intellectual pursuit. The days in which Paul lived were evil – and nothing has changed – society at large is not concerned about doing what God wants. The majority of people don’t think twice about what God’s will is they simply do as they please!

If we are to be true to the name “Christian” then we had better –       15 Be very careful, then, how you live –…, 16 making the most of every opportunity… understand[ing] what the Lord’s will is. (NIV)

1 Thessalonians 5:15-18 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.

16 Be joyful always; 17 pray continually; 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. (NIV)

When Christians are always moaning, negative, critical, whinging about this or that – THEN you need to ask yourself “Am I doing God’s will?”

I am not talking about always having a grin on your face like a Cheshire cat!

I am not saying we need to praise God for bad things — but God is always worthy of praise and thanks because of what he has done for us in Christ!

It is absolute foolishness to pretend to be seeking God’s will for your life in terms of a marriage partner, career, role in the Church, etc. when then in no deep desire to pursue the will of God which he has already revealed in his infinite kindness in the Bible.

The next part of the verse needs to be carefully looked at – through all spiritual wisdom and understanding – “Through” is one of those little words in Gk. which can be translated in a number of ways – here it would better be translated “Which consists of” – asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will [which consists of] all spiritual wisdom and understanding.

Remeber from Proverbs – wisdom in scripture is never merely intellectual – wisdom is knowing HOW to live.

Paul understands the world in which he lives – it is the same world in which the Colossian Christians live – it is a world filled with all kinds of human philosophies and tradition. A world not dissimilar to ours, filled with syncreticism and pluralism -{hope to deal w. this in our series on being a witness staring next week} – these are subtle philosophies that want to put Christ on a smorgasbord of religious choice – Paul won’t have it — thus in the next section he goes on to expound the supremacy of Christ who is head over every power and authority.

What we all need is the knowledge of his will [which consists of] all spiritual wisdom and understanding. – Some run after every new apparently exciting gimmick that is going to be the “answer to all our problems”. Others are so bound by tradition that want as little change as possible. BUT what we need are Christians whose knowledge of God is not simply intellectual but who know God in a fresh and profound way.

–and who are prepared TO DO his will whether or not it upsets the politically correct philosopies of the day or the cherished traditions of the past!

Within the churches today there is a lack of basic biblical knowledge – not theological dogma – not being able to simply parrot verses of scripture without understanding what they mean – [I am in favour of memorizing scripture – with understanding] – what I mean is a knowledge of the Bible that begins to understand the mind of God with all spiritual wisdom and understanding.

You will never hope to mature to this level unless you read and study the scriptures yourself – read books – listen to tapes of good teaching – engage in discussion with other Christians – AND pray for spiritual wisdom and understanding.

We don’t expect Children to grow without food – we don’t expect to live without food so then why do we expect to survive spiritually without spiritual nourishment.

Why is this so important — because this is what pleases God!!

  1. PAUL PRAYS THAT THEY MIGHT BE UTTERLY PLEASING TO THE LORD.

Colossians 1:10 10 And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: ….

We saw this last week – 2 Thess. 1:5 … you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, …

Here Paul’s call is stronger and more personal – worthy of the Lord – and just so that we get the point that this includes practical living he adds – and may please him in every way: –

ILLUS. Those who were in Church last Sunday Evening will have heard Ant Greenham telling about honour killing in Jordan – when one member of a family does something to dishonour the family name another family member may, if the offence is serious, kill the offender.

In such cultures shame is a very powerful deterrent/ motivation. People will go to great lengths at great personal cost to avoid bringing shame on the family name. Even in our Western Culture sensitive individuals don’t want to disappoint a loved one BUT this is nothing like a shame culture. {Our radical individualism often applauds stubborn independence}

Most cultures in the first Century were shame culture but Paul doesn’t tell them to live up to the expectations of the Family or even the Church BUT to THE LORD. To adopt an approach to life that would please Jesus in every way!!

Certainly, shame culture can be very cruel and manipulate and destroy individuals in the name of community!

The church can be guilty of a similar attitude by manipulating people by guilt without pardon, power without mercy and conformity without grace!

However, a greater problem in the Western Church with its radical individualism is that some think they can sin with impunity – an indifference to sin.

What we need to do is to watch our action and reactions, our conduct and our speaking so that we avoid bringing shame on the name of our Lord but rather live worthy of him.

How can we begin to live lives that are pleaseing to the Lord unless we know what God’s will is? However, knowledge of God’s will is not an end in itself rather pleasing him is the goal.

How do we do that? Paul never allows us to be abstract.

  1. PAUL PORTRAYS 4 CHARACTERISTICS OF A LIFE THAT PLEASES THE LORD.

Colossians 1:10-12 10 …. bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully 12 giving thanks to the Father, …

These flesh out what it means to live a life worthy of the Lord!

~ bearing fruit in every good work.

It is true that we are saved by grace through faith BUT for a purpose …

Ephesians 2:10 10 For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (NIV)

We are not made acceptable to God by doing good works BUT Paul can’t imagine a Christian not doing good works – good works are the fruit of our spiritual life — ARE YOU bearing fruit????

~ growing in the knowledge of God

There is no concept in the NT of the normal Christian life being static!!

We are not spiritual robot that do mechanical tasks, we are living spiritual organism who are to be growing. Growing in what?? — our knowledge of God!! He has already prayed that they will be filled with the knowledge of his will.

Knowing God depends in part upon us obeying God – the more we know of God’s will the more we need to obey – the more we obey the more we will understand what God’s will is and the more we will obey and so on & on …

How often do we want God to tell us what he wants us to do! We want some new revelation of God! YET we are not obeying what we already do know!

As we obey what we do know, in that we get to know God better and his will…

Are you growing in your knowledge of God? Head and heart!!

~ showing great endurance and patience

This is a tough one! Endurance and patience are not popular virtues today! We want “windfalls”, fast-foods, quick results, jackpots, pleasure not pain, …

This is not stoical “grin-and-bear-it” stamina – nor it it simply physical stamina ~

BUT it is the kind of virtue that enables a believer to survive with joy when persecuted ~ like Job, to maintain a trust in God when suffering!

This is the kind of life that pleases the Lord and is worthy of Him.

~ giving joyful thanks to the Father

To neglect thankfulness to God is like slapping him in the face – consider this One to whom we are to offer thanks!

Colossians 1:12-14 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. 13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. (NIV)

In the light of this salvation which God has given us the only appropraite response is JOYFUL THANKS!

THIS IS PAUL’S PRAYER FOR THE COLOSSIONS….

~ prays constantly that they will be filled with the knowledge of God’s                        will.

~ the purpose

– to live a life worthy of the Lord

– utterly pleasing to him – [which is impossible …]

~ impossible unless they are growing and have a

spiritual grasp of what God’s will is.

IF this is true then there must be concrete evidence

– bearing fruit in every good work

– growing in the knowledge of God

– empowered by God to show great patience and endurance

– joyfully thanking God for the amazing salvation given them

through his beloved Son, Jesus Christ!

When last did we pray like this for each other or for ourselves?

Philippians 2:8-11 – Jesus: The ascended King of kings and Lord of lords!

Jesus: The ascended King of kings and Lord of lords!

Philippians 2v8-11.

Introduction.

If you had stood in Godalming High Street today and asked “What is today?”, most would, I suspect, not remember and if reminded would probably not know the significance of Ascension Day.

We have special holidays for Christmas Day, Good Friday and Easter Sunday but not for Ascension day [although I understand that it used to be – it is in South Africa where I grew up, at least it was up to the time we left 10 years ago]

The Ascension is something we probably don’t talk about as much as we should – and yet it is, of course, just as important as the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus.

Philippians 2v8-11 is one of the key passages concerning the ascension of Jesus. Stuart Briscoe in his book about preaching says we should always ask three questions about a text – “What?” “So what?” “Now what?”

I would like to ask 6 questions of this text – Who? What? How? Why? For what? So what?

  1. WHO? Who ascended?

This seems a pointless question really in that we know it was Jesus. He was the one who went up into heaven. However in the context of this passage it is inadequate to simply say ‘Jesus’ without looking at what comes in verses 5-8.

It is a passage that tells us about a Jesus who existed long before his birth in Bethlehem. A person who is in every respect completely God – with all the holiness, majesty and power that we ascribe to God Almighty.

It is also important to note that he never ceased being God when he descended to earth as a man – he became human. He is human in every way that we are human. His body was like ours – his feeling were human feelings – his needs were human needs – his physical limitations and weaknesses were human YET he remained completely God while being completely human.

In his body he bore the results of sin – not his but ours – for he was holy and without sin. This sinlessness did not make his humanity any less real!

While being completely God and completely Human he experienced death – a cruel, shameful, rejected execution on a cross. Rejected by humanity and by his Father in heaven.

WHO ASCENDED? This same Jesus!!

  1. WHAT? What did it mean for Jesus to ascend?

What is it that is being emphasised here when we read that Jesus went up into heaven [Acts 1]. Yes physically he went up into the sky – the disciples saw him go – up there. And we talk of heaven being up there and hell being down there.

ILLUS.: We use the words ‘up’ and ‘down’ to express value judgements! We speak of someone going up the corporate ladder!

We speak of sportsmen going up the rankings.

We speak of high office.

We talk about a pupil being top of the class.

We use this language not too talk about their physical position but their ranking / status / place of honour in relation to other people.

When Jesus ascended he did go up physically BUT that is not really Paul’s point here. God is expressing a value judgement about his Son – In the eyes of God the Father, Jesus is to have the most highly honoured place in the Universe.

The ascension is a visible demonstration to heaven and earth and hell that Jesus is Lord of All. Philippians 2:10 …… every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, (NIV)

The fact that he is worshipped in heaven where no one except God is worshipped confirms his deity without question.

The ascension was not just a way of getting Jesus off the earth and into heaven but is an historical declaration by God about how highly honoured Jesus is! The word exalted in v.9 is not the usually word used – this is the only time it is used in the bible and it means “super-exalted”

  1. HOW? How did the ascension happen?

We read the following in Hebrews 4:14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.

This speaks of Jesus having in himself the power and the will to return to heaven. However this passage in Philippians tells us that God … super-exalted him –

When we read Acts we are told that 40 days are the resurrection Jesus ascended. The ascension was a deliberately planned divine act. This was no hasty decision.

ILLUS.: When Janet and I work among the Muslim community in SA for 10 years we often heard Muslims tell us about the ascension of Jesus – that God snatched him away just before the crucifixion to rescue him from death.

The ascension certainly was God in action BUT not on a rescue mission – this was the honouring of a victor not the rescue of a failed mission!

  1. WHY? Why did God honour Jesus in this way?

Well the text tells us – v.9 begins with the word “therefore …” – all that jesus is and did resulted in him being exalted by God.

It is not enough to say that he was exalted because he died on the cross. Vv.5-8 tell us about the ‘mind of Christ’ – what sort of person he is.

He was not grasping in relation to his glory – he didn’t claim his rights. We hear so much these days about our rights – what we are entitled to. Even as Christians we are sucked into this way of thinking. Jesus gave his up. He emptied himself – he humbled himself – From the splendour of heaven to the squalor of earth, to the place of the cursed. From perfection and holiness to becoming sin for us!

THEREFORE God exalted him!

One of the basic principles of God’s word is this –Proverbs 16:18

18 Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. (NIV)

Proverbs 29:23 23 A man’s pride brings him low, but a man of lowly spirit gains honour. (NIV)

Then Jesus himself taught … Matthew 23:12 12 For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. (NIV)

A lesson we do well to learn!!

  1. SO WHAT? So what that Jesus ascended!

Because we focus in his first coming on the fact that Jesus cam as Saviour and that at his second coming he will come as King – we can be guilty of thinking that his coronation day is still coming. But that is not true. Jesus was crowned when he ascended.

NB the past tense of v.9 – Therefore God exalted him to the highest place

and gave him the name that is above every name, (NIV)

In the book of Revelation the Apostle John describes “the Lamb who was slain as King of kings and Lord of lords”

The crowning day has happened – Jesus is King! Jesus is Lord!

The problem is that not everyone knows it – Christians know it and rejoice – BUT millions do not know that Jesus is King. BUT on that day when the king returns they will know.

ILLUS.: This past week a friend of ours father died – When Janet told me about it she also said that he would be having a secular funeral because he was an Atheist. My response was “He isn’t an atheist anymore!”

On that day when we face Christ – either at death or his return – we will bow before him and acknowledge he is King of kings and Lord of lords.

The sad fact is that those who for the first time acknowledge his Lordship on that day will not be making a saving confession – it will be a grudging admission.

All will submit, all will confess BUT not all will be saved – only those you now confess his Lordship in repentance and faith!

  1. NOW WHAT? What does Christ’s ascension mean for us now?

  1. One Lord

The thing that the ascension proclaims most clearly of all is that Jesus is Lord! This is the present reality – Christ is ruling.

While millions don’t know it – we do!

The proper response to Christ as Lord is to bend the knee in submission and confess with the tongue that he is Lord!

Romans 10:9 9 .. if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

If Jesus is MY Lord – which should be the profession of every believer then we must live under that Lordship – so that our time, talents, priorities, possessions etc are all directed by him.

It I as we live in this way that we give evidence to the all that Jesus is reigning and that we are his people.

  1. One Task

This passage of Philippians 2 sets limits to the task of evangelism.

ILLUS.: This was brought home to me recently when I went to visit one of our neighbours in ICU – I talked with him for an hour on a Friday afternoon – On Sunday evening he died unexpectedly – I buried him the following week. Should I have said more – If I had known he wasn’t going to make it would I have been more urgent in my witness?

It is a sobering challenge – While it is true we cannot save anyone. Are we by our timidity / laziness / unconcern hindering others from entering the kingdom and confessing Jesus as Lord?

Someone has said “The high of selfishness is the Christian who is content to go to heaven alone!”

The Bible makes it quite clear that now is the time – Today is the day of salvation.

There are so many things that take up our time and energy – often good things – but how do theses things fit in with the task that Jesus left us to do.

This ‘Jesus Video Project’ – offering the life of Jesus on video to every home in Godalming is a wonderful opportunity. NOT that evangelism should begin and end with the Jesus Video Project. If you are not involved yet – why not get involved?

While I firmly believe in God’s sovereignty I also firmly believe that Christians are responsible to tell others of Jesus as Lord and Saviour – ONE TASK!!

  1. One Life

We see in Christ a coming from heaven’s glory to Calvary and on to the supreme height of heaven, exalted by God.

His life bears the hallmark of divine approval.

Paul begins this section by saying – “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus” –

Paul urges us to look at Christ and copy him.

His desire above all else was to please and obey his Father – is that my desire?

He was always concerned more for others than for himself/ he never did things for his own advantage or comfort – it that my concern?

He never sought the approval of people but of his Father – do I?

Jim Elliott – “Just one life, it will soon be past, only what’s done for Christ will last”

There is so much that crowds in on our lives – there is so much to do – so much choice – so many distractions – so many good things. Focusing on the ascended Lord Jesus Christ recognising that we will all bow before him will help us put life in its proper perspective.

4) One Hope.

If we believe, as we say we do, that Jesus is the ascended Lord then Who do you think is in control of this world? Does it not therefore make sense that we make it our life’s ambition to please him?

My hope / my future is absolutely secure because Jesus has ascended and is King of kings and Lord of lords!

Ephesians 6: 14-20 – Spiritual defence

SPIRITUAL DEFENCE!

Ephesians 6:14 – 20. (v21 – 24 – concluding remarks)

INTRODUCTION.

In verses 10 – 13 we saw that the Christian is involved in a struggle – usually with physical and/or practical implications – but ultimately the struggle is not against human forces but against spiritual ones. […not against flesh and blood .. v12]. God’s enemy is Satan and his demons and simply because we cannot see them physically does not mean that they do not exist. There is spiritual conflict going on around us – the devil is doing his utmost to disrupt and undermine the kingdom of God — and whoever is on God’s side will be a target.

Now as we said last time, many in the Western World, with our anti-supernatarulistic attitude, like to think that belief in devils and demons is a lot of hocus-pocus. Firstly, there is an rapid increase of interest in the occult and witchcraft in the UK – more witches than clergy. Secondly, simply because a person or group of people do not believe something does not mean that it does not exist.

ILLUS.: 500 years ago people believed the world was flat. Does that mean that the world was ever flat??

The Bible always assumes the existence of the devil and demons — and Jesus certainly spoke of the devil and demons as real spiritual being and not figments of people imaginations.

So then if Satan is trying to undermine our faith and cause us to give-up on following Christ how are we to defend ourselves from this attack? This is exactly what Paul is talking about in v. 13 – 18.

The point that Paul is emphasising in this section is that the Christian must stand firm – here he uses military language – in other places we are told not to be tossed about by every new teaching that comes along. In Psalm 1 the description is of a tree with deep roots. It is easy to be stable when everything around us is calm and peaceful and we are free from trouble BUT Paul here is urging us to stand firm when in the midst of conflict.

How does your faith in Christ stand up under pressure? When things are difficulty – do you begin to doubt God’s goodness and trustworthiness and love – do you question his sovereignty – do you doubt that he knows what he is doing??

Instead of turning to God do you begin to turn away from him? Turn your back? I am not talking about a fleeting doubt or questioning BUT a deliberate turning away from God!! THAT is exactly what Satan wants — that is what happened in the Garden of Eden – Adam and Eve doubted God!!

So then how do we stand?? When Paul wrote this letter he was in prison in Rome, probably chained to a Roman soldier – he would have had a constant reminder of the soldier’s equipment and uses this as an illustration of the Christians spiritual equipment – Roman soldiers were seen in everyday live throughout the Roman Empire so his readers would immediately be able to picture what he was talking about.

He uses the word ‘panoplia’ referring to the full armour of a heavy-armed soldier – the point being that Paul is emphasising the completeness of God’s armour – armour that is designed and furnished by God.

He focuses on 6 pieces of the soldiers equipment – the belt, breastplate, boots, shield, helmet and sword.

  1. The Belt of Truth.

The belt was a leather and was more part of the under garments than the armour, however it was an essential piece of equipment. The tunic was a long garment, square, with holes cut in for the head and arms. It hung loosely over the body and it is easy to see how such a garment could be a hindrance in the heat of battle which was usually hand-to-hand combat.

It was not only soldier who do this – everyone wore long flowing robes and if you needed to run of do manual work the robes had to be tuck out of the way in order for them to have freedom of movement.

Peter uses the term figuratively 1 Peter 1:13

13 Therefore, prepare your minds for action [gird up the loins of your mind]; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. (NIV)

The NIV translation is right – ‘ .. prepare .. action ..’   NOW spiritually speaking the thing that prepares us is TRUTH.

Two possibilities:

1] objective doctrinal truth – the content of God’s truth is essential for every believer – we have already seen this in Ephesians 4:14

14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. (NIV)

One of the factor that is always present in an unstable Christian is that s/he is not sure of what s/he believes. Satan will do all he can to undermine the truth of God – not always by opposing it but by sowing doubt in our minds and trying to destabilise us. It is vitally important that Christians study and know the truth.

2] subjective practical truth – it is never enough to only know God’s truth academically – we need to have an attitude of truthfulness. David , the psalmist –

Psalm 51:6 6 Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place. (NIV)

The Christian needs to be honest and truthful at all costs. When we slid into hypocrisy and scheming, when we are underhand and deceptive then we are playing the devil’s game – and that is exactly what he wants us to do – he knows and we should know that we will never beat him at his own game.

Being truthful is not always easy – “Honesty is that best policy!” – Well it depends what you mean by best. Sometimes it is not the best or most advantageous to yourself to be honest – if you are totally honest you may not get the job; you might not be shown up in a good light – sometimes you will suffer for being truthful. So honesty might not be the best policy in terms of self interest but it is the right policy before God and that is what counts in the final analysis!

  1. THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS.

The breastplates that the Roman soldiers wore were either made of metal or leather with slices of animal hooves or horns sewn in. The purpose of course was to protect the torso – not just the front but going around the back to protect all the vital organs.

Paul describes the Christian breastplate as righteousness. He is not talking about self righteousness – the kind that thinks that by legalistic behaviour can earn us Brownie points with God. Far from being a protective covering, self-righteousness gives Satan a ready made weapon to smother and stifle our spiritual life and service to God.

Isaiah [64:6] describes our righteousness as filthy rags and not as protective armour.

Righteousness in Paul’s letter usually means ‘justification’ – by which he means that we can be right before God – accepted and forgiven by him – not because we have gained enough merit points BUT on the basis that Jesus Christ died on the cross to save sinner from God’s punishment. It on that basis and that basis alone that we can be justified before God. Thus Paul can Write in Romans 8:1

1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, (NIV)

This is the assurance that Christians are righteous – in a right with God – This is the protection against Satan’s attacks and accusations. So when you are tempted to think “I God can’t accept me , I am not good enough!” On the one hand you are right you are not good enough, no-one is – but on the other hand Jesus Christ died to save sinners and he accepts us as we are when we come to him and he never turns away any sincere person. And when he has accepted us there is nothing Satan can do to change that – this is our protective breastplate of righteousness.

However, as with truth, it is not simply objective righteousness, but also practical. From our position of justified righteousness before God there needs to be an outworking of that in practical living – in character and conduct.

MacArthur puts it this way “To put on the breastplate of righteousness is to live in daily, moment-by-moment obedience to our heavenly Father. This part of God’s armour is holy living, for which God supplies the standard and the power but for which we must supply the willingness. God Himself puts on our imputed righteousness -[that is the righteousness he gives us] – but we must put on our practical righteousness.”

  1. THE BOOTS OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE.

Paul has in mind the half-boots worn by the Roman Legionnaires – heavy studded leather soles and supports around the ankle. They were designed to protect the feet, not to hinder mobility and to stop the foot from slipping.

Ephesians 6:15 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness [preparation or firmness] that comes from the gospel of peace. (NIV)

As with the previous two point there can be a double meaning in this verse and it is unnecessary to choose between the two – we can accept both as valid and maybe that is how Paul mean us to read it.

1] We can take it to mean the steadfastness and certainty that the gospel gives to those who accept it. Just as hiking boot give you firmness on your feet when you walk the countryside.

There is a steadiness and an assurance for those you know that they are at peace with God. This has already been dealt with in 2v14ff where Paul explains that Christ is our peace and that knowing him bring peace between us and God. No matter how fierce the spiritual battle may be or how aggressive Satan’s attack there can be peace of heart and mind because we are at peace with God.

Do you know that peace? That in spite of adverse circumstances and pressure you can say in your heart “I am at peace with God!” That kind of confidence in God give a firmness and a steadiness to life that no insurance policy can ever offer.

2] Preparedness – a readiness to carry the gospel of peace wherever we go.

ILLUS.: When I was in the army – if we were on standby for action we had to sleep with our boots on so that the instant we were called we were ready.

There is no doubt that as Christians we should always be ready to bear witness to Christ as the one who gives peace.

When Paul write to the Romans in Romans 10:15 [quoting Isa.52:7]…, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” (NIV)

The task of bringing the message of peace with God to the World has been given to the Church and we must be ready to do that wherever and whenever we are able otherwise we cannot claim to have our feet shod with the readiness of the gospel of peace.

When we relax – take our boots off and put our feet up Satan is delighted. What the devil fears most is the advance of the gospel when people turn away from him and turn toward God.

  1. THE SHIELD OF FAITH.

Ephesians 6:16 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. (NIV)

The shield mentioned here was 41 foot long and 21 foot wide – used for individual protection and if standing shoulder to shoulder could form a barrier to enemy missiles.

The faith to which Paul refers is the basic trust that accepts God’s gift of salvation and the daily faith that trust God for each day – for his provision and his help.

Every person alive has faith – you have faith in those chairs – in the roof that it won’t fall on you – you have faith in the Bank that the will be able to give you your money when you want it. Christian faith is far greater than this kind of faith NOT because Christians are better people of strong in their belief but because of the object of their faith -viz. God Himself.

You faith is only as strong as the object in which you place it. If you place your faith in an Insurance company that goes bust then your faith was ill-founded.

ILLUS.: John Paton that great missionary to the South Sea Islands was translating the Bible and cold not find a word for ‘faith’ when one day a man ran into his hut flopped down in a chair and exclaimed “It is good to rest my whole weight on this chair” “That’s it” said Paton “ I’ll translate faith as ‘resting one’s whole weight on God”.

Resting your faith on God is the most sensible and well-founded thing that we can ever do.

Such well-founded faith is the thing that protects us from Satan’s stinging-fiery darts. Satan’s fiery darts are always aimed at our trust and confidence and faith in God.

When Satan tempted Jesus after his 40 day fast in the desert he tried to get him to distrust –          God’s provision – turn these stones into bread.

– God’s protection – throw yourself off the Temple tower

– God’s plan – I will give you all the kingdoms of the earth when God                                     had planned to give all to His Son.

The only way to withstand Satan’s fiery missiles is to TRUST God, taking the shield of Faith. Rest all your weigh on HIM>

  1. THE HELMET OF SALVATION.

The purpose of the helmet is obvious – it is to protect the head.

In ourselves and in our own strength there is nothing we can do to withstand Satan’s attack – our only defence, our only protection is God’s saving power. This salvation is a gift.

Ephesians 2:8 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — (NIV) This is God’s gift in the here and now!

In 1 Thessalonians 5:8 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. (NIV)

While we are the recipients of God’s salvation that does not imply that we are to be passive – we are not spectators. We are part of the action. runners – soldiers – doers of good deeds etc…

It is not only the present gift that keeps us going but also the future hope of salvation as mentioned in 1 Thess…. hope of salvation as a helmet.. .

It is knowing that the struggle is only temporary, only for this life [which is but a blink of the eye in terms of eternity] and then at the end is the prize, the glorious fulfillment of our salvation when we will be in heaven with Christ forever.

ILLUS.: when I was younger – a runner – 100m, 200, 400m – 400m was the killer – a struggle of mind and body in the home straight – but it was the finishing tape that kept me going. The prize was to break the tape.

In the midst of the struggles of life and the difficulties that we often face – the temptation to just ‘go with the flo’ – why bother with all the Christian stuff – wouldn’t it be easier to just life and let live –   LOOK UP! look at the end – the hope – live in the light of eternity!!

  1. THE SWORD OF THE SPIRIT = THE WORD OF GOD.

Notice that it is referred to as the sword of the Spirit – it is not a physical weapon designed by human minds or manufactured by human hands.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 3 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. (NIV)

We are involved in a Spiritual struggle and without the Spirit of God we are powerless.

The sword of the Spirit is not the physical book of the Bible with which we beat people over the head – it is only as the Word of God internalised in our hearts and minds that it becomes an effective weapon – it must become part of you – it most mould your thinking and direct your life if it is going to be any protection at all.

ILLUS.: In the army we were given rifles – modern day sword – we were told – “While you are in the army this is your wife!” It went everywhere with you – even to bed and to the toilet!!

The enemy will often attack when you least expect it and so you can never drop your guard – always be alert!!

Jesus used the Word of God to defend himself against Satan attack! It is also an offence weapon – it pricks people’s hearts and consciences and causes them to repent and turn to God.

It is not without importance that Paul say the Sword of the Spirit = the Word of God – because the word and the Spirit always work together. When the Word of God is proclaimed the Spirit of God is at work in the hearts and minds of the hearers.

ILLUS.: Last week I told you that we had to shout slogans in the army – one such was ‘Know your weapon’

How well do you know yours??!

This is the armour that God provides for us – it is his armour – and he provides it for our protection and our use in his service – TRUTH – RIGHTEOUSNESS – PEACE – FAITH – SALVATION – THE WORD OF GOD.

  1. PRAYER.

Pray is not another weapon – but is should be something that pervades our whole life.

By praying we are expressing that we are dependent upon God for everything – all the time.

“ ..in the Spirit ..” – tell us that we need to be prompted and guided by the Spirit These are the two most power weapons at our disposal – “the sword of the Spirit“ [The word of God] and “Prayer in the Spirit”

ALL occasions – God wants us to come to Him in pray for everything – in good times and in bad times – when we feel like and when we don’t – there is nothing that we can’t talk to God about.

ALL types of praying [prayer and supplication] – many and varied forms of prayer – short, long, private, public, walking, sitting, standing, kneeling, ….

ALL the time – does not mean that you spend your life on your knees BUT that we consciously live our lives in God’s presence – living in fellowship with God – that our relationship with God influences every aspect of our lives.

ALL the saints – Paul has just been describing the Spiritual conflict that all Christians are in – we are all in it and therefore we all need to pray for each other.

“.. Be alert and keep on praying ..” [v.18]

Reminds us of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane – “Watch and pray” – During his ministry Jesus warned us his disciples to be alert both in view of his unexpected return and the onset of temptation.

“Be alert” – because the devil goes around like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour and because Jesus may return at any time BUT esp. because we have a tendency to sleep when we should be praying – {remember the disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane – Jesus was in his hour of greatest need – he needed his disciples to pray for him but they were sleeping}

“Without prayer we are too feeble and too flabby to stand against the forces of evil” [Stott]

Paul knew the value of pray and that is why he asks the Ephesian Christians to pray for him     Ephesians 6:19-20

19 Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should. (NIV)

This is not a selfish prayer – notice he does not ask to be released from prison – his first priority is the good news of the gospel.

CONCLUSION.

Ephesians 6:23-24

23 Peace to the brothers, and love with faith from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love. (NIV)

4 key words – the two that stand out in the letter are ‘peace’ and ‘grace’ – peace with God and with one another.

Grace – we are able to know peace with God because he is gracious and loving and forgiving.

In view of all that God has done for us and given us “in Christ” may we stand firm for him seeking, with the help of the Spirit, to apply the lesson we have learn from this letter of Ephesians.

Grace to all [of you] who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love.

Ephesians 6:10-13 – Spiritual warfare

SPIRITUAL WARFARE!

Ephesians 6:10-13.

INTRODUCTION.

Throughout this letter to the Ephesians Paul has talked about the wonderful blessings that belongs to those who are “in Christ”. He has given us broad sweeps of God’s unfolding purposes for the world and especially for the Church. He has taught us about the creation of a new society under the Lordship of Christ, viz. the Church. A society were there should be no racism, sexism, ageism or any other discrimination. Paul has then gone on to appeal to his readers and to us to pursue harmony and unity and fellowship and righteousness – thus expressing in everyday life the practical out working of this Christian Faith – the home and the workplace is were the spirit-filled life is to be lived out.

In case we are tempted to think that the only reason we are not fulfilling this ideal is that we are not trying hard enough or are not committed enough – Paul reminds us that it is it not simply us and God BUT there is another factor to consider and that is the Devil and his cohorts.

Paul has already mentioned the devil in 2v2 and 4v27 – he does not try to give an account of where Satan and his forces came from – he simply assumes their existence as common ground between himself and his readers.

In these verses Paul is warning the Ephesian Church of the fierce opposition they will face. He is urging us to follow Christ and thus we need to remember that Jesus was attacked and tempted by Satan – at the beginning of his ministry for 40 days in the desert and again no doubt in the Garden of Gethsemane Satan was active in trying to prevent Jesus from going to the cross.

Whenever Christians are passionately following Christ and seeking to obey him and serve him faithfully you can be sure Satan will be active in opposition. Yes the Lord give us victory but Satan wants to destroy the work of God. As Christians, when we begin to do something significant for God, we can expect there to be opposition. A Christian who never has conflict and struggle in some form or other is a Christian who has either fallen into sin or complacency.

Paul and the Christians in Ephesus knew this to be a reality – when Paul first when to Ephesus; he was run out of the synagogue by the Jewish leaders, he was mimicked by the apostate Jewish exorcists, and he was threatened by Demetrimus and the others silversmiths because their idol making business suffered because of his ministry. This was opposition from outside the church. BUT later in Acts 20:29-30 Paul warns the Ephesian Elders of the dangers within the flock.

Acts 20:29-30 29 I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. 30 Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them. (NIV)

Satan has always had a double strategy persecution and opposition from within and corruption and division within – It happened in Paul’s day and it happens today.

Today I believe the Western Church has fallen headlong into Satan’s trap – the Church in general is more concerned about her own comfort than she is about God’s mission of taking the gospel to all nations. And as individual Christians we too often live to ourselves rather than for the kingdom and as a consequence the Church is weak!

The NT leaves us in no doubt that Satan will attack Christians and the Church from without and from within, by whatever means – we are involved in a spiritual war, we are not on peace-time manoeuvres and this war will continue until we die or Christ returns! Paul doesn’t want his readers or us to ever forget this fact!

I want to outline these verses under 4 key directives.

  1. BE WELL PREPARED BY GOD’S STRENGTH. v10.

Ephesians 6:10

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. (NIV)

If we are going to engage in spiritual battle then our own strength is totally useless. The “be strong” can be slightly misleading in that we might be tempted to think that we are to find this strength within ourselves. This phrase would be better translated “Be strengthened in the Lord” – it is in the passive tense – this strength does not and can not come from us – we must receive it from the Lord.

One of the primary truths that Paul teaching in the Book of Ephesians is that we are ‘in Christ’ “his life is our life, his power is our power, his truth is our truth, his way is our way and his strength is our strength.” [Mac Arthur]

There are 4 words in Gk. for power or strength and Paul uses 3 in this verse – Strong Dumnamos – dynamite

might kratos – strength in relation to domination exercised over something/one. Christ has already defeated Satan on the Cross – he has dominated – our final victory of the worse that Satan can throw at us is certain – the ultimate worst that the Devil can do to us is ‘cause’ [then only if God allows] our death BUT ‘in Christ’ we have overcome death.

power iscus – latent power or power in possession. The Lord doesn’t have to be strengthened himself – power is only power because it comes from him.

Our own strength is never strong enough to oppose Satan but we can say with Paul Philippians 4:13 13 I can do everything through him who gives me strength. (NIV)

This is not boastful arrogance but rather humble assured confidence that Christ has overcome the Evil One.

  1. BE WELL PROTECTED BY GOD’S ARMOUR. v.11a

Ephesians 6:11 Put on the full armour of so that you can take your stand……(NIV)

If we are going to be strong in the Lord then we need to use the equipment that God provides for us.

ILLUS. Army in RSA – conscript – on arrival we were stripped of all our civilian things and supplied by the army – everything we need to be soldiers was supplied.

You can’t fight a war without the proper equipment.

In God’s army we come with nothing – He supplies everything we need. The ‘put on ..’ of this verse is a permanent putting on – we do not join God’s army and then suddenly decide to become civilians again for a while – this is not like Dad’s army which we are involved in for a few hours a week – although judging by the lives of some Christians one is left wondering.

We will look at the armour next week!!

But we can be sure of this! – God has given us all we need to stand against the enemy. Stand your ground – hold on to what you believe – don’t crumble under pressure – don’t allow the enemy to force you to retreat or compromise your faith.

  1. BE WELL AWARE OF GOD’S ENEMY. v.11b-12.

Ephesians 6:11-12 ….against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (NIV)

Who is this enemy that we are talking about?

It is not ‘flesh and blood’ – these refers to humans beings in their present mortal human nature – cf. 1 Corinthians 15:50

50 I declare to you, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. (NIV)

17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. (NIV)

Who then is this enemy? It is the devil and all his demons.

The Devil – it is not fashionable today to believe in the Devil – just this past week there has been much discussion in the media about hell and consequently about Satan. And for many, even Clergy, maybe esp. clergy, there is a light hearted dismissal of the devil as a figment of superstitious imaginations. But if we take the Bible at its word then the devil is a personal being. We see him active in the garden of Eden – in the temptation of Jesus – and referred to many times as the enemy of God. He is described as the ruler of demons [Luke 11:15], the ruler of this world [John 16:11], the god of this world [2 Cor.4:4], the prince of the power of the air [Eph.2:2].

Numerous times he is called Satan, the devil.

We know from this verse and other Scriptures that he is not alone – there are many demons.

For most of us living in the Western world we are not aware of the spirit world – if however you lived in Africa, South America, India and such places you would be very aware of the spirit world. For many in these places if you get sick it is not because you have a virus but because the spirits are angry with you or someone has placed a spell on you and so you go first to the Witch doctor {sangoma} before you go to the medical doctor.

ILLUS. The Zulu people will put their bed on brick to make it higher so that the Tokalosh – evil spirit – will not be able to hide under it – he like small dark spaces.

It is interesting however that in our Western world where the existence of a personal God and a personal devil is questioned more and more there is an increase in demonic and occultic practices. Even in England there are more and more people going back to the old Celtic religions – there are millions who are obsessed with horoscopes.

It is clear that Jesus treated demons as a reality – he cast them out of people on many occasions. They are real and that is why it is so dangerous to play around with Ouija boards, glassy-glassy, Dungeons and dragons and many of the modern video games that can easily get children involved in the occult. These things are to be avoided. Many will argue that these things are harmless fun – that is exactly what Satan would have us believe and by the time we realise that they are not harmless it is too late.

There are 3 things we need to learn about the devil and demons from this verse:

They are powerful – These principalities and powers are possibly different ranks of evil spirits within the hierarchy of hell – Whatever they are we know that they are cosmic powers – there power must not be underestimated – True they have been defeated on the cross but they have not conceded defeat nor have they yet been destroyed.

They are wicked – they are powerful but the use their power destructively and not constructively – they seek to destroy. They are totally unscrupulous in the way the wage war on God’s kingdom – they honour no Geneva Convention on the rule of engagement.

They are cunning – the schemes of the devil – sometimes he is a roaring lion, sometimes a wolf in sheep’s clothes, sometimes and angel of light.

Seldom is there a frontal attack on the Church – open persecution – in the first three centuries that made the Church strong – no he tries to seduce us into compromise and deceive us into error.

ILLUS.: Think of the Western Church – comfortable in its affluent cocoon – Satan is quite happy for you to come to Church as long as you don’t take it too seriously – as long as there is little real difference between Christians and the rest of Society he is quite content – a good dose of religion he would prescribe himself.

But when you are serious about your relationship with Jesus Christ and obeying him and fulfilling his command to take the gospel to the whole world then be aware – Satan will try everything to stop you! Remember that we are involved in a war – and we are not arm-chair generals sitting behind the lines drinking coffee while the troops fight – we are the troops — ‘our struggle …’ the word means hand-to-hand combat.

If you want to get a good insight into how subtle and scheming the devil is I encourage you to read C S Lewis’s “Screwtape letters

In our day the deceptions are many – undermining of family values [alternative family] — sexual perversion — proliferation of cults and isms [New Age] — the undermining of the gospel – the deity of Christ, this miracle, the resurrection, substitutionary sacrifice — pluralism …

How are we to live in the face of this evil onslaught??

  1. BE WELL GROUNDED IN GOD’S VICTORY. v.13.

Ephesians 6:13 13 Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. (NIV)

There are too extremes that Christians can go to:

1) under-estimating the power of the devil.

2) crediting him with more power than he has.

  1. Lloyd-Jones wrote the following about under-estimating the devil – “ I am certain that one of the main causes of the ill state of the church today is the fact that the devil is being forgotten. All is attributed to us; we have all become so psychological in our attitude and thinking. We are ignorant of this great objective fact, the being, the existence of the devil, the adversary, the accuser, and his fiery darts.”

The other extreme is that we credit him with too much power – he has been defeated and while we are no match for him on our own we need to remember that :

1 John 4:4

4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. (NIV)

Territorial spirits – this has been a subject for debate in recent times. What is meant by this term is that some Christians believe that each geographical area is under the control of an evil spirit and before the church can engage in evangelism the area must be prayed over usually by prayer-walk. This is partly the reason for the ‘March for Jesus’ which sings triumphalist songs and claims areas for Christ.

This is a difficult area – Undoubtedly we need to pray for the people of the area we live in – we know that demons can inhabit people and animals so why not geographical areas. In my work among the Asian community in SA I saw demonic activity.

ILLUS.: I know of case where people have moved into a new house and there have been noises and they have seen shadows etc. but when investigating there is no one there — the house has been prayed over and these strange occurrences have ceased.

However I have questions about the extent of these so called territorial spirits – Besides tow possible reference in Daniel – which are not clear to say the least the Bible is silent about such matters. And I fear that this kind of activity can be and often is a cop-out from the hard work of evangelism – of preaching the gospel and living a godly life in the society in which God has placed us. It is easy to walk down the road praying or singing triumphalist songs but it is hard work doing evangelism. If we had as many people involved in evangelism as we see in the ‘March for Jesus’ I believe we would make more of an impact for the gospel.

Don’t misunderstand me – I sometime walk the streets praying – I have taken part in ‘Marches’ – but what I am saying is that we need to be careful that these things do not detract for the discipline of Bible Study, personal evangelism, prayer, …. we live is a world that wants instant results but God tells us that his work is strenuous and disciplined like that of a good soldier’s.

It is all to easy for us to be complacent and even oblivious to the battle that is raging around us. The Western church is generally prosperous and respectable and often rejoices in victories that involved no battles and a kind of peace that is merely the absence of conflict. This is the victory and peace of the draft-dodger or defector who refuses to fight. These are not interested in “Armour” because they are not engaged in war.[MacArthur]

In God’s army every Christian is a soldier – and the enemy is not flesh and blood – we are not out to attack people but to win them over to God’s side – the enemy is the devil and his cohorts – BUT God has promised that we will have all the necessary armour and equipment we need to fight.

Our responsibility is to resist and to stand firm.

ILLUS.: During the Reformation Martin Luther stood before the Diet of Worms accused of heresy – he was condemned because he declared that people were saved by faith alone, in Christ alone, by grace alone. The Devil had hood-winked the Church into distorting the gospel – but Luther was convicted of God’s truth and declaredMy conscience is captive to the Word of God … Here I stand, I cannot do otherwise!”

How are you standing today? – are you a good soldier of Christ? Are you engaged in the affairs of the King or have you become entangled in the affairs of this life and now you loyalties are divided.

Maybe you started well – but the song is true, you see “It’s not how you start but how you finish” — You may have had wonderful experiences in the past but how about now — it is those who stand firm to the end who will be saved.

There are many who have serve God in the past but have grown weary – they have turned their backs – they have take the armour off — they have lost the courage and the power and the desire to stand firm.

BUT as we are strengthened by God we are able to stand firm and to resist the devil and his scheming – James 4:7

7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (NIV)

1 Peter 5:8-9

8 Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith… (NIV)

Finally remember that the victory is already won!

Romans 8:31-39     31 …If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 … 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? ……. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 … 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (NIV)

“more than conquerors!!”
