You have probably heard the phrase “I’ll believe it when I see it”, or “seeing is believing”. In fact, you have probably used these phrases yourself. It is part of our human nature to want to see, touch, smell, hear or taste something before we will accept it as real. In a court of law, a jury relies on evidence to convict a defendant of a crime; in the field of science, researchers require tangible results to prove theories.

I was listening to the radio earlier this week and the presenter was leading a discussion about the recent reform of the state pension. As always, there were differing opinions about this issue, but some of the contributors were quite angry because they felt that the new system was unfair and they were being cheated of their hard earned retirement fund. This is a perfectly understandable reaction when faced with a situation that is perceived to be unfair.
